Arrow 720p-1080p HD Video playback on any netbook even you 10v - 01-09-2010, 09:29 AM

Ever wanted to play 720p video on your low end Atom based netbook? But you don't have ION based netbook? Tired of skipping and slow Full HD video playback? I just found out a near perfect solution for any netbook, even for those with just 1,6GHz Intel Atom processor and Mobile Intel(R) 945 Express...

Because the visual quality will be better.

It's always easier to scale down than scale up, even if we're using a much more powerful processor than available in our netbooks.

So, given the 1024 x 600 native resolution, you'll get a higher quality visual experience scaling 1280 x 720 downwards, than 720 x 480 upwards.

you can also use core avc in windows media player 12

Codec Guide: Windows 7 Preferred DirectShow Filter Tweak Tool

Important Note

The changes that this tool makes to the preferred filter settings of Windows only have effect when a player uses DirectShow.
Windows Media Player and Media Center use a new framework called Media Foundation instead of DirectShow when playing certain file formats. In that case they will always use the Microsoft decoders, and not any third party DirectShow filters. Examples of file formats that are played using Media Foundation are: .m2ts, .mp4, and .mov.
This tool has the capability to disable the use of Media Foundation for specific file extensions. The only negative side effect of those tweaks is that thumbnails will not be generated in Windows Explorer.
This tool is also capable of completely disabling Media Foundation and other Microsoft playback components by renaming certain files. However, you should be aware that doing so might have noticeable side effects. For example, playback of live TV in Media Center could stop working. But in any case, any change made by the tool can easily be undone to restore the system to its original state.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have disabled the media foundation but have not experienced any negative side effect.

And now i have flawless 720p video playback in windows media player 12 in windows 7 ultimate on my dell mini 10v netbook.

I am using a Mini 1012 with the Broadcom accelerator and was having problems before with viewing purchased content from iTunes.

I applied this solution and though material that plays in WMP plays well it does not render the QT/iTunes content. I get a message that it cannot ender file. I thought the content from Apple was H.264 also ?

I don't think so. You could try. I think the core codec has to be manually setup by players like MPC and you can't do that for youtube HD for example.

Using MPC? Try quick time alternative unless the video has DRM, I don't know I don't buy movies from itunes.

so i just did this last night. it works. first i tried to watch disney pixars "cars" and all it would do was just show a frame and stream audio then change frames like 10 seconds later and continue to stream audio. after i installed the codec program it streamed video and audio simultaniously. might not have been in perfect sync but i didnt notice any issues. i am happy

i did as the OP instructed. and the hd playback is great and smooth. BUT i have 1 issue.
i cant watch with subtitles. when i try to load a subtitle file (txt) media player classic wants me to change the video renderer (the stuff in the output like VMR-9 VMR-7 Overlay and others).
according to this guide it should be system default, but subtitles doesnt work in system default i have to change it to sth else. and when i do that the video playbck isnt smooth anymore. any ideas how to help me?

Awesome, thanks OP! I stopped using my netbook last year and eventually sold it, because I got an iPad and it serves similar purpose. I came back here just for the heck of it, and found this guide! Awesome. I have a low end Toshiba laptop running on AMD 2-core CPU. It could barely play 720p back (plays well the first 5 minutes then the CPU heats up and slow up tremendously). Installing the new codec and media player classic, I have no problem with cpu and the heat problem.
