Can't you boot up off the USB installation thumb drive and fix it?

You should be able to access Terminal from the Menu.

I can boot from an nbi USB drive fine, how do you open the terminal in chameleon? I can't use safe mode or recovery mode, or boot verbose

Sigh, I am stupid, I get what you mean now. I can boot into my osx installation drive but aren't sure how to rename the file from there. Can I do so in the terminal?

I had the same problem. I used legacy_kernel-1080v2.pkg. It does what you want to do, but "automagically". Please feel free to google it, I would provide a url for you but alas I have too few posts. Search google for legacy_kernel-1080v2.pkg and look for the 2shared link. I downloaded it from there myself.

Try booting into osx, running the .pkg and then rebooting to see if it took. Failing that pull out the usb drive and tap the shift button as you boot. you may need to try it a couple of times but you should get to a screen displaying your hard drive. if you type on this page you will see letters appear along the bottom. type -x , hit enter and that should take you into safe mode. try again from there. also try renaming that mach_kernel you misnamed in terminal in both modes if that fails to work.

A long shot, but have you tried booting into osx and running NetbookInstaller 20100616212351? it has cured a multitude of sins for me.

If you end up wiping and starting again try the above .pkg file instead of messing about with terminal, so much easier. I am a relative noob at this too, but the above options can't make matters worse.

When you start into the OS X Installer USB, go to "Utilities" --> "Terminal." It will start you into a Terminal window with root access. Type in (no quotes):
"cd /". This should bring you to the root of the drive.

"cd /Volumes" This will bring you to the mounted volumes folder.

"ls" Shows you the list of folders in there. Your hard drive should be listed.

"cd HardDriveNameHere" Replace HardDriveNameHere with your HD's name. If it has spaces in it, begin the name of the drive with a quote, type it as it appears, then close the quotes. So, if your drive is called "Macintosh HD," you would put: cd "Macintosh HD"

"mv mach_kernal mach_kernel" This renames the kernel to mach_kernel so you can start up.

"exit" Securely closes the Terminal session, close out of the Terminal window and restart to start back into OS X.

I'm currently trying to bring my 10v to 10.6.8 right now; I have it on 10.6.7 and I'm following the instructions in post #90. Will the 10.6.8 Combo Updater work if I already have it on 10.6.7? I've never tried this before.

I went from 10.6.3 to 10.6.8 using the combo update and before rebooting, I replaced the mach kernel. I then ran NetbookInstaller 20100616212351 and restarted. I installed the sleepenabler.kext with kext helper and then had to force it to quit when i restarted. When you restart you will hang on a blue screen for 5 minutes or so and then boot into the OS. I checked for updates, installed them and then ran NetbookInstaller 20100616212351 again for good measure. It might work with 10.6.7 too. I also think perhaps you may only need the 10.6.8 update and not the full combo. YMMV...

Hi all, I'm still a new hackintosh user so excuse me if this is basic.

I'm having a major problem with my sound, I can see the icon but it's greyed out. I updated to 10.6.8 and everything else seems to work fine (re installed netbook installer and did disk repairs), I even solved the hibernation's too old issue but for the life of me I can't solve the no sound issue. I keep reading posts stating that a file needs to be changed but I don't understand where the files are and what I'm changing them too.

Can someone please give me some basic instructions for getting my sound back?

I followed Nomad2k4's instructions with one exception: I used NBI 0.8.5pre as opposed to the NBI special because I had already used it previously with the 10.6.7 update.

10.6.8 with Nawcom's kernel works fine, sound ok, but no wifi.
Before I try downgrading my system with the archive/migration tool (I have a time machine backup) riddle me this, Batman:

Can I just install NBI special over 0.8.5pre in the hope that it will fix the wifi issue, or is the problem the kernel?

Thanks to Nomad2k4 (big thanks!) tutorial on page 9 I was able to perform perfect 10.6.8 installation. Let me add few comments to it:

My setup:
BIOS version: A06
Snow Leopard: 10.6.3 Retail DVD
Service tag: 4VR62L1
Upgraded with SSD drive and 2GB RAM
