Unhappy Replace Web Browser with FireFox - 11-08-2008, 09:56 PM

Hey Everyone,

I just got my Mini and I am super stoked with it. Beats my expectations in every way. I am running Ubuntu and have pretty much everything set up just so... however, I don't like that blue icon for the debranded firefox. On my VMWare installation of Ubuntu I saw there was a FireFox and then a Web Browser in Synaptic. However, on this mini, all the firefox references have that blue icon. Is there a way to remove the web browser and install a fully branded copy of firefox?

Don't have my Mini yet, but you could try and see if you can simply replace the Dell application icons for "Web Browser" with the default ones for Firefox.

They should be located in /usr/lib/firefox-3.0.3/icons

Unfortunately I can't attach the defaults from that directory since some of them are .xpm files and are not supported via the forum upload -- you'll need to fetch these from your VMWare to try this out.

BTW, may need to logout/login or restart to test if the changes worked.

I do not get it. Why is Firefox de-branded? Is it functionally different?

I am trying to think back to when i was the support monkey at lindows/Linspire and why we re branded the Mozilla or if we did. I would need to pull out one of my linspire 4.0 disks.
I am reasonably cretin that we were re branding because we were funding some extensions to the firefireox and using them before they were punt in the mail tree.

right click to spell check
and
right click to web search

those 2 things are the best contribution that linspire made to the open source world.

no luck trying to change repositories or anything. i am starting to feel the hurt of dell's lpia built ubuntu... even the main repositories in the source selector 404 because there aren't any for lpia architecture. does anyone know if there are Ubuntu hardy repositories for lpia... maybe we could get proper firefox from there

Has anybody found a solution? It just feels weird using non-really Firefox Firefox

Hi, I add this repository and you'll get a branded Firefox upon upgrading:
Code:
deb http://dell-mini.archive.canonical.com/ubuntu hardy-netbook-remix main universe

I don't really want to change the whole distro, I'm happy with what Dell has shipped with for now. Oh well, no Firefox logo isn't the end of the world.
