Not sure if this has been posted... I had seen a generic Ubuntu image from dell before, but this is the one for the Mini:

Nice post.

We had an iso torrent provided by UnaClocker. I guess it is the same. Good news that Dell put it on the site.

Has anyone actually tried the one off the Dell support site? I have downloaded it twice, and tried burning it on two different machines / in Windows / Ubuntu, and I can't boot or read the disks when done...

Just curious if I am the only one with the problem... I am sure the drives / dvd-r's are fine.. I burn other stuff all the time without problems..

I found the torrent one a while ago so downloading that right now...

Thanks,

OK. You people need to search (maybe search is broken???) or read the posts on this forum as well as the Dell Linux forum and the Ubuntu forums. I have linked to all three:

I have been going through this ad naseum for the past few days. The file that Dell posted on their support site is an image not an iso. It boots from a USB key. Follow my directions in the above links or download the torrent for the restore iso from these links:

These are torrents for the iso image. Burn this to a DVD and boot from a DVD-ROM

Thanks for all the info! Sorry for asking redundant questions.. I did use search for another issue I was looking for but everything kept pointing back to the os x installs which wasn't useful (although that is pretty spiffy that you can run os x on this thing..) anyway I lost faith in the search pretty quick but I will try it next time

I am running the imagewriter right now.. learning something new on linux all the time!

Thanks again!

Hi onefish, thanks alot for your great finding and kind instruction.

I'm new to Linux, so I have to ask the following stupid question.
I'd appreciate your suggestion.

My question is:
1) Can I simply put the img file from Dell into a USB key and turn on MINI to restore?
Would it boot up without doing anything else?
Would it work just like Window's setup boot disk?

2) Despite question 1), you also instructs that we need to do one of the 2 options to start restoration:
a) use the "dd" command; or
b) use the writer

How do you get to this stage after inserting a USB key with the Dell's img?
Either way, some sort of system needs to be running to type the command or run the writer.

Would you elaborate a little bit more to this dumber, please??

thanks in advance.

Hello usutomo,

You will need to download the restore image from the Dell support site. Once you have it follow my instructions in this thread to 'write" that image to a USB drive. My instructions are for Linux. I do not know how to do this on Windows. Perhaps another forum member can jump in here to help.

You can also use a Live Linux distro to get a Linux OS on your PC to allow you to write the image to your USB drive.

Once the image has been written to the USB drive, simply boot off it. You may have to press the 0 (zero) key to change the boot order in the bios screen. Once it boots up just press enter and the image will over write the data on the drive. Once its done. It will instruct you to remove your USB key. At that point it will reboot.

Once again this image does not allow you to install the Dell Ubuntu OS. It just restores the factory image to the drive.

You will then go through the initial Ubuntu set up screens asking for language, keyboard and user info.
