Try wlan0 or something like that instead. Use ifconfig for a list of devices, eth0 is usually ethernet.

How did you get kismet to work w/ the 4310? I get a failure going to monitor mode every time I try to run it from the terminal. I know there is some question about monitor mode and the broadcom cards, but i had kismet working on another laptop i had w/ a 4311 in it. I don't remember how I got it working though. I'm getting this when I try to run kismet.

mhibbs@mhibbs:~$ sudo kismet
[sudo] password for mhibbs:
Launching kismet_server: //usr/bin/kismet_server
Suid priv-dropping disabled. This may not be secure.
No specific sources given to be enabled, all will be enabled.
Non-RFMon VAPs will be destroyed on multi-vap interfaces (ie, madwifi-ng)
Enabling channel hopping.
Enabling channel splitting.
Source 0 (wireless): Enabling monitor mode for bcm43xx source interface eth1 channel 6...
FATAL: Failed to set monitor mode: Invalid argument. This usually means your drivers either do not support monitor mode, or use a different mechanism for getting to it. Make sure you have a version of your drivers that support monitor mode, and consult the troubleshooting section of the README.
Done.

Thank you. I'll try, too.
I got the same problem and didn't manage to make kismet working yet.
The same result obtained installing (with a little pain) Backtrack 3 on a pen drive.
Hoping that the first people reaching a solution will post it.

I took the Dell Wireless 1395 card out of an Inspiron 1501 and have successfully gotten aircrack working:

You need to remove the wl driver and use the b43 driver supplied with b43-cutter program (installable through synaptic)
sudo rmmod wl
sudo modprobe b43

than your card can be put in promiscuous mode and used to do penetration testing.

Do you mean you took the 1395 out and put the 4310 in?
I ask this question because it seems that the 4310 is different from the other 43xx cards (see http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43).
My Mini works well (configured with Network Administration Tool coming with the Ubuntu 8.04) with my WiFi router but it seems that it is not able to connect to other free WiFi hot spots (I use WiFi radar for that task). It sniffs them but no way to connect.

I tried SWScanner.
It has a user-friendly interface.
Unfortunately, it says that the interface (of the Mini) does not allow scanning...
