Default I'm fed up with Dell's Ubuntu - 10-16-2008, 05:18 AM

Ok, I'm calling it quits with Dell's tweaked Ubuntu. First there was the 1gb ram limit. And the probably easy fix, but still annoying Compiz doesn't auto-start. Then there's the much more distressing problem, which is it will not use standard Ubuntu packages! I originally tried to install VirtualBox through the package manager. No dice, says it's the wrong architecture.. Whatever.. Couple days later now.. I want the new FlashPlayer that just came out.. I buy a computer that just came out, I'm obviously the type to want to stay on the bleeding edge of things.. So I download the package.. No dice, same freakin error, I try the tar.gz version instead, still won't freakin install. So I'm going to give standard Ubuntu a whirl. If the performance takes a dive, or I can't get all the devices to work (short of the SD slot, which I really have zero need for), then I'm probably done with Linux on this device altogether.
I'll keep you posted..

Thanks.
My biggest gripe is this install is a mortified DVD live install.....
I did all my space planing based on the standard CD install ... At least I was smart enough to order the 8 gig ssd...

Oh and one thing i did not know the pipe | is fn'd  I use that all teh time when greping lists.

damn granny installs...

I used unetbootin to put the Ubuntu Live CD onto a thumbdrive. It booted gracefully and is now installing. Looks like it'll be done soon and I can start looking into what does and doesn't work. See if I can find any reason not to go this route.

Sorry guys.. I'll be no more help, I installed OS X on my mini. Flash10 works great now. And if I ever get my bigger flash drive from MyDigitalDiscount, I'm sure VMWare will install on it just fine too. Again, sorry, don't mean to rain on your parade. To each their own.
