I join the company and ask for a step by step guide. I wish to abandon the old 8.04 that is no more supported.
Is there somebody knowing the drawback in terms of battery discharge due to an OS not tweaked for lpia?
Thanks

Ubuntu has very good instructions for a USB stick / thumb drive install. Try This link to Ubuntu.

Thank you.
I've got a live version on a USB stick and it seems to me very easy to make the wireless working. Still, I had not the courage to install it onto the netbook. I would like to know if there are drawbacks, in terms of performance or battery life for example. It would be very useful to have some numbers by people who already did the jump.

REPLY: This poor netbook is really strapped for both memory and disk space. I think mine has a 8GB RAM drive and 500MB of RAM. It is very slow and locks a lot. Slow processor. Now, to Ubuntu. It is certainly easy to use. Ubuntu version 11.10 is the latest and the best. Installed with lots of default apps it probably runs 3.7 GB. Skype can be added and works ok but not as well as the WIN version. Email is Thunderbird and browser is Firefox, both excellent. There are a number of notes apps, but I recommend Evernote. There is a Linux clone which uses your Evernote data called NixNote.

Good luck. I finally gave up on the Dell mini and gave it to my daughter-in-law with only a browser pointing to a kids site.

2GB RAM would help. You don't say how much disk you have. You can store photos on an SD card, up to 32GB.
