Had the same issues as all of you, but in addition Totem Movie Player no longer works after the update. I had several movies in H264 format stored in a SDHC card. They all worked great before the update. After the update, the soundtrack is fine, but no video only a green background screen. I tried reinstalling Totem Movie Player but still have same issue. I downloaded VLC and it works great (audio and video working great) , but still would like to know why Movie Player no longer works after the update. Anyone else have this problem?

Hi people,

This is my first post and I have been using this excellent forum since I became the proud owner of my Dell Mini 9 at the start of December. I have had various problems following the latest update for Dell's Ubuntu distro but have managed to solve the Firefox scrolling problem. I tried all of the usual about:config mods for Firefox to no avail so I decided to look at Compiz as the potential cause of the problem. I had a backup of my compiz settings and simply re-loaded these back into the compiz manager. i also turned off the smopoth scrolling in Firefox prefs and it has solved the problem. Pages now scroll smoothly as they did before so I hope that this info helps other who are experiencing the same problem.

On a side note, I have now disabled updates as I do not want to risk the same thing happening again and I am now of the opinion that "If it ain't broke - don't fix it"

This can be a dangerous proposition. Even thought there are very few Linux based virii, the Linux vulnerability list is nearly as long as the Windows list. Keeping on top of updates is the single best way to protect your Linux based machine. Instead of disabling updates an alternative option is to disable all of your updates except the ones marked "security".

System - Administration - Software Sources
Ubuntu Software - keep all of these checked
Updates - only check Important Security Updates

That's true however I don't have the ability to select only security updates with the Dell Distro as all of the checkboxes are disabled by default.

You can do this manually:
Code:
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
Just put a "#" at the start of every line except the -security and default repository. i.e.
Code:
deb http://dell-mini.archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ hardy main universe multiverse restricted
deb-src http://dell-mini.archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ hardy main universe multiverse restricted

#deb http://dell-mini.archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ hardy-updates main universe multiverse restricted
#deb-src http://dell-mini.archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ hardy-updates main universe multiverse restricted

deb http://dell-mini.archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ hardy-security main universe multiverse restricted
deb-src http://dell-mini.archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ hardy-security main universe multiverse restricted

#deb http://dell-mini.archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ hardy-netbook-base main universe multiverse restricted
#deb-src http://dell-mini.archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ hardy-netbook-base main universe multiverse restricted

#deb http://dell-mini.archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ hardy-dell-mini main universe multiverse restricted
#deb-src http://dell-mini.archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ hardy-dell-mini main universe multiverse restricted
And save. Then:
Code:
sudo apt-get update

1) What do the 177 Updates Fix? WOW! Is it worth it?
2) The notification icon alerting me of the updates is really annoying me. I think I can turn the icon off by right clicking the icon and deselecting it. If I choose to have the notification icon appear again at a later date, how would I turn it back on?
3) Does clicking notification icon simply bring up the update manager or does it do more?

Thank you in advance. I am new to this forum

The updates do exactly that. Update to more recent versions of software. Some are for security reasons (e.g. Firefox), some merely add stability (supposedly). The latest kernel also supports more than 900MB RAM. It is generally recommended to update.

However, there are some cautionary tales. I may write a new thread with details about how to minimize risk and correct problems.

Update notifier will generally reappear automatically - the default is for it to check daily for updates. All it does is launch update-manager if you select it.

I am having issues with the most current update as well. I was missing all my bookmarks in firefox, Windows key no longer maximizes the window, and I can not get the theme colors back to the way I had them.

I fixed the missing bookmarks by copying the old folder over the new one in /home/. I know I can remap the windows key and install a new theme but the update should not be breaking things like this! This is a good way to give ubuntu a bad name for this high profile application.

So anyway after deciding that I was not going to fix these issues myself, I decided to fire up dells support chat and see what the official response is. From my dell mini 9 I opened firefox and went to dell support chat and was greeted with the following error....

Please note: We apologize for the inconvenience, however, Google’s “Chrome” Browser is not compatible with our Chat application.
To access chat support or chat sales, please choose a different browser.

Is there a way to roll-back this update until there are better fixes?

Not easily; you would have to manually locate all the pre-update files and install them.

I would still recommend installing the updates; the fixes are not too difficult.
