My dell inspiron duo is suddenly shutting down when unplugged and this only happens when I move the notebook like in 50% of those times. Very weird.

It´s not an overheating issue becuase it happens soon or late after starting it. I think it is a system crash that is motivated by a screen movement sensor or something like that.

I can move it when plugged, but, whats the point?

I know the battery average is bad on the duo but this happens even when charged.

I have downloaded dell fixing programs and even paid for them to fix the computer... I got a little bit faster but the shuttingdown proble persists.
Am I the only one with this weird problem?

Nope. I'm having the same issue. Currently waiting for Dell online support. I'm fed up with it, as it's happenign more and more often.

It also generally won't power back on until I've plugged it into AC power (even though the battery is fully charged)

*EDIT: Dell tells me it's an internal problem. Sending it in to the repair depot :/
Disappointing, to say the least. I guess this means I will lose my Thinix Touch software, too, since I'm out of activations.

I've not had the issue as yet, however, it sounds suspiciously like an issue related to the power management theme for the unit, either sneaking into sleep, hibernation or shutdown.

Thats the first area I'd check and to test would create a test theme of NO blank, sleep etc for battery once to see if she'll drain down once, without crapping out on you.

I'd certainly do that first before waiting on Dell support unless you have an extended everything best service contract.

I got my unit back from dell yesterday. According to their paperwork, they replaced the battery and the battery connections (I've not seen inside the unit, so i don't know entirely what that means).

But after speaking to a care representative, there may be an issue with some units in that the battery is improperly installed, and when uit is moved suddenly, it loses the connection between the battery and the unit (it sort of "shifts" inside the case).

I can't speak to the statement's acuracy. Regardless, I tested it extensively last night for quite a bit on battery power and I had no sudden shutdowns. So here's HOPING that did the trick.


EDIT: Day 2 and still no sudden shutdown. So far, so good. Used it extensively last night.

Just my 2 cents, I had this issue for weeks, it was annoying the heck out of me, then I disconnected the battery, and reconnected the battery and haven't had problems since. Not saying this will work for others, but who knows it might.

By the way...I also appear to be getting better battery life since the servicing. i was struggling to get 2 hours of web surfing before, and I got 2 hours 35 minutes last night and still had a little juice left when I shut it down. (It said I had 10 minutes)

I may have had a defective battery or something.

I've not had the problem, but am curious if you found a way to do that yourself -- or did you have to find a tech do that?

I have 3 machines from clients - 2 machines had the issue of the battery connector being loose - and 1 client had the connector from the hard-drive become loose. The connectors can become loose if the machine is shaken or dropped.

Caution: Taking the Dell Duo apart is complex - the parts are flimsy and not well made.

On a side note: Windows 8 is not compatible for this device:

The following are reported with the Windows 8 Upgrade Advisor:

- Secure Boot is not compatible with this PC
- The Touchscreen of this PC is not designed for Windows 8

Dell - Very disappointing with your introduction of the Dell-duo. Also I see Dell-Duo is no longer for sale by Dell - I wonder Why!

People that purchased this machine to use with Windows 8 will be very disappointed.

I've run every version of Windows 8 since the developers preview on my Duo and it has only made it a lot better. Windows 7 was a drag on the low resources that the Duo has but Windows 8 is super fast. It has made my Duo a joy to use. I have not had a single problem with Windows 8 on it.
