Default Ubuntu 8.04 Problems - 11-04-2010, 09:27 AM

I'm helping a friend whose Dell Mini 12 has Ubuntu 8.04 on it as delivered.
I'm having problems with 'Software Sources'; the UI doesn't work well (I can't seem to change the URLs) and I am not sure what the repository URLs have changed to anyway. Anyone know the correct URLs ?

Is it easy to upgrade to a standard newer version of Ubuntu ? Would I need a Dell-specific ISO, or should the standard DVD work ? Broadcom doesn't appear to offer a Linux driver for the BCM 4312 wireless NIC any longer - does that mean that I couldn't get the wireless i/f to work ?

Suggestions / comments welcomed.

Dell's Ubuntu is not really supported so there are no distribution updates available.

He can definitely install 10.04 but it wont be an upgrade, he will need to backup his info and reinstall. Personally I would recommend 10.04 netbook edition, it's a long term release just like 8.04 and not broken like 10.10 netbook. Just download the iso from ubuntu.com use ubootnet(windows) or usb-creator(ubuntu) to install to a usb drive.

The wifi will probably need a driver installed to work properly. Connect via ethernet and use the "hardware drivers" utility to install the correct drivers.

I think an upgrade in place from "Dellbuntu" to a newer version of "normal" Ubuntu could be more problematic than a complete reinstall. (Preceded by backing up all user data )

As for normal Ubuntu, I expect the Broadcom WiFi will work. I think a Mini 12's biggest problems with normal Ubuntu will be the GMA500 graphics (like the 1010) and the slow hard drive. I don't have any personal experience with the GMA500, but here's some info about the GMA500 in Ubuntu.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice ! What is 'ubootnet' ? I did a quick search but found myself among German U-Boats in 1943....
I'll keep looking.

UNetbootin is a utility that takes some bootable ISOs or discs (ISOs are basically CDs or DVDs stored as files) and places them on flash or hard drives. Most OS installers are distributed as discs or ISOs, so tools like UNetbootin are useful for people without external CD drives.
