Skip the RAM upgrade, you have to tear the machine totally apart and the performance isn't greatly improved.
If it was me, I'd buy a copy of OS X, an 8 gig Sandisc thumb drive and a potable DVD drive (unless you have an X-BOX 360 HDDVD add on USB drive laying around) and make my own USB installer by following one of the guides posted here in the guides section. That way of you need to fix anything in the future you have the installer ready to go and are familiar with the process.
