Well, I thought I'd check out my Mini 9 under the installed Ubuntu 8.0.4, just to make sure everything's working, before ripping it apart to install OS X. So turned it on out of the box and:

- sound doesn't work. At all.
- won't connect to any of my wireless networks (128-bit WEP, WPA2 Personal). In fact it won't even see the WPA2 802.11g WDS network
- wired connection doesn't work either
- won't see more than 1gb ram - I gather that this is a 'feature' of the Dell 8.0.4 kernel.

Is all this normal?

Richard

Normal? Of course not.

The 2GB RAM issue is fixed with an update, which you can't get without internet.

If you've just got it - I'd send it back. It doesn't work.

No - ugm6hr is absolutely correct. There's a hardware problem (potentially a motherboard issue) if you can't get multiple parts of the hardware working on your Mini.

Ubuntu's hardware support for the various bits in the Mini is up to spec.

Sorry to hear about your trouble.

I'm glad you thought to try it out in Ubuntu before loading OSX onto it. We'd have been running in circles trying to figure out why none of your gadgets were working. heheheh.

Tired of wondering if your Mini9 is doing ANYTHING? - Add a HDD Activity LED

Indeed - a good reason to stick with the default installation on any computer for the first month or so.

Well, I managed about 12 hours... ;-) replaced the SSD with a Runcore, had a few false starts and, once OS X was up and running, sound, bt and wireless JustWorked(TM). Now to back up before streamlining the install a bit more...

thanks guys
Richard
