It looks like it's getting through the CHAP handshake, but it then sends an IPV6 packet, which promptly makes it puke. Is this script supposed to be running IPV4 or IPV6? Could that be the problem?

---------- Post added at 08:44 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:53 AM ----------

Okay, I finally got it working in SL 10.6.2

I didn't even need the script. These settings are for AT&T

Telephone Number: Leave blank
Account Name: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1

Under advanced --> Modem Tab

Sony Ericsson
Model GPRS (GSM/3g)
APN: wap.cingular
CID: 1

PPP tab

Check - Connect automatically when needed (or not)
Uncheck Prompt every ___ minutes (or not)
Uncheck Disconnect if idle for ____ minutes (or not)
Uncheck Disconnect when user logs out (or not)
Uncheck Disconnect when switching user accounts (or not)
Uncheck Prompt for password after dialing (or not)
Check Redial ___ times if busy, waiting ____ seconds before redialing
Uncheck Send echo packets
Uncheck Use verbose logging (or not)
Terminal Script None
Uncheck Use TCP header compression <-- This seemed to be one of the keys
Uncheck Connect using a terminal window (command line)

Back on page 1 or 2 of this thread, there is a how to disable IPv6. This seems be be necessary for the connection to work with AT&T. To make life easier, before you go into terminal, rename your connection to "Dell" or something without spaces by clicking on the gear at the bottom in the Network Pref pane, and click "Rename Service". Change to Dell and hit Rename.

Lastly, go to terminal.

Code:
sudo -s
Password
networksetup -listallnetworkservices
networksetup -setv6off Dell
At this point, you can rename the connection back in the pref pane to Dell Wireless 5530 HSPA Mobile or whatever you want.

Also, this only seems to work on the first instance of the Dell Wireless 5530 HSPA Mobile, not Dell Wireless 5530 HSPA Mobile 2. I'm not sure what the deal is with that, but I'm not sure why I need two modem connections anyway.

Also, has anyone come up with a signal indicator for this? Pretty crappy just seeing the modem up in the task bar.

Smile Turning off radio after disconnecting

The script turns on radio before dialling but does not turn it off after disconnecting which means unnessesary waste of energy.

I added the AT+CFUN=4 command (=turns on airplane mode = all radio off) to the script (attached). It is executed after the disconnecting.

Something else:
For those of you who can't get connected check this out. I spent days trying to understand why I see a successful chap login only to get disconnected immediately after. The reason was: the card never established a connection to the 3G network. Using a terminal, send AT+CFUN=1 to the card. If it returns "ERROR" then the WWAN fix is the solution.

I have been fighting with the 5530 datacard all night, moving from bios a05 to a06 and then back down to a04, and I finally got it working! :-)

I changed the cards AT-command config and made my own modem script, which is tested and reliably working for me now. Since I made it generic and maybe some others might find it useful too, I have attached it to this post.

Just drop "DellHSPA5530" into your "/Library/Modem Scripts/" folder.
I packed some Screenshots of my actual network setup where "surfo2" is my carrier's APN.
The screenshots are in german but since the controls are all the same, it should be no problem to adapt my settings.

Tested with BIOS A04, OSX 10.6.3, NBI 0.8.4 RC1, Carrier: O2 Germany

Cheers, cizko

Default Errors

I tried the script...now sees the 5530..using a vodafone Sim so set to other as in the guide....Doesn't show the Dell card as an option... only shows NM Universal modem or ZTE USB Modem.....If I set vendor to Vodafone Only model shown is VC701SI

using a Dell 910 running Snow Leopard 10.6.3
I should probably mention that There was not a folder in Library named ModemScripts so I made the folder and put the script in it

Got mine running on 10.6.8, bios A06 with t-Mobile 3g prepay
I had to:
1. Tape pin 20 on the modem
2. Install script "Dell Mobile Broadband"
3. Disabled IPv6
4. in system preferences/network/advanced/modem/ selected other. Applied changes and connected.
