you probably need to install the driver for the card reader. It does not appear to use a standard SD card protocol.
Did they post any drivers on their site or ship with it?

I have been successful in adding the SD minicard for internal storage in the unused WWAN slot.

Ever since I bought the mini9, the empty space in the back has been buggin' me. Based on the excellent research in this thread, I went ahead and bought a MR04 card off of Ebay ($8US+ship). Today, I soldered in the missing connector (only used the needed USB pins and power/ground) and BIOS saw the card immediately. (I also unsoldered one of the standoffs from the WIFI card and used it for this new card - hope to find the correct part number for those later and add back).

Since I have a dual-boot OSX/Windows7 machine, with USB highlighted as primary source for boot, the machine did not start at first. When I chose HDD for startup, it booted into Win7 and installed the RICOH USB2.0 driver immediately. Now I have a 16G SD internal storage card (soon to be replaced with a 32G card).

Interestingly, based on my comments above, the SD card is noted during BOOT. I will attempt tonight to put XP on the SD card and see if I can boot from it. Thereby, we can have a simple solution to either boot from SSD or SD. WooHoo ...

This mod is very easy and looks "factory". I'll take some pics tonight and post them here if able. I'll also boot up OSX and see if it recognizes the card as well.

(So, what is the easiest storage upgrades we can do with minimal mods? 1x 64G Runcore + 1x 32G SD external slot + 1x 32G SD internal slot = 128G of total storage space). Not too shabby. 8-)

p.s. if your card is not seen, try another SD card or check the connector etc

Sweet!
Can't wait to hear about more results, Ishagi.

Received lowest quality mini 9 with 512 megs RAM, 4 GB SSD. Additions:
-2 GB RAM
-4 GB SSD [2 GB SD Card: getting 16 GB SDHC]
Sold for $180 so I could buy Mini 10, XP/Ubuntu, 160GB HD, 1GB RAM, 1366x768 screen, 6-cell for $260.
[Extra screen space IS AMAZING, as is having a working keyboard]

Pics:

1. Shows Ricoh driver on mini pci-e SD card:

2. Shows my Win7 explorer screen. Note 32G external SD card shows up with an SD icon, and 16G internal SD card is a drive icon.

3. Shows card installed in WWAN slot.

(NOTE: the 32G Runcore does not show the 15G for OSX as the HSF+ partition is "invisible")

BTW: OSX did see all drives and partitions.

UPDATE: Able to boot Ubuntu from the internal SD drive.

I put Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 (beta) on the internal SD drive, selected USB boot option and Ubuntu started with no issues. It also sees my entire storage solution - MACOSX, Windows drive, external SD card, and itself on the internal SD.

http://www.ubuntumini.com/2009/03/ub...e-beta-on.html

Thererfore, with further testing necessary, it seems an operating system "can" be booted from SD on the Mini9. Sweet. I'll have to change my "poll" to triple boot now. Double Sweet.

http://www.mouser.com/Search/Product...7F5gbWVDiyu7Ry

I saw this in one of the other areas here. Double check the part number
