Hello-

I am also having this problem.. I only have 1 ssd and I had a blue screen saying that it was copying files (and using my slow USB it took like 5 hours) then when it restarted, all I got was a fatal error blue screen.

NOW for some reason, the next day, its not getting the blue screen. It's getting the hal error. I have tried restarting several times, but it goes to the hal.dll error each time.

I try going to boot options: USB: and it says boot failed.

I am using an HP formatting utility on my USB that says it also makes your USB bootable.

I am running out of options here, and I cant even figure out how to use my ubuntu restore CD on a netbook with no cd rom. The USB option doesnt seem to be working well for me.

Anyone have any ideas???

did you format in FAT32 or NTFS?

it must be FAT32....also try using the WinSetupFromUSB utility..you can get it here: (PS. Its Free)

Default Im getting missing HAL.DLL - 03-07-2010, 04:26 PM

Hi im trying to install windows from a USB using winsetupfromusb, and im getting the same problem as others, i get an error saying missing HAL.DLL. I have installed windows and done everything in Part 1, but i get the HAL.DLL error when i go into step 2. Ive also tried editing the boot.ini and changed the paritition value but im still having no luck. I also have a few option on the USB already to try and solve the error but they dont work either any ideas.

I didn't edit the boot.ini file, instead I held down the ESC key and chose the correct partition (C:\ i think) that had the windows install files on them and voila, Windows XP!

Hi, I am having more or less the same issue, which is driving me crazy...

I have a netbook with Ubuntu 12.04 and must install Win Xp for some stupid work reason.

I created a bootable usb pen with the wintoflash tool.

Now i get the hal.dll error each time i try to start from the pendrive.
Even in text mode I get a blue page fatal error.

I understand that I should modify my boot.ini file in the pendrive and I tried all the solutions here shown. With no luck.
Here is my disk config: "win" is the empty partition where I want to install XP.

Please help
