Question Does the Latitude 2100 have a fan ? - 05-28-2009, 09:53 AM

A question I haven't been able to answer yet, I do think it's fanless, but I don't know for sure - the documentation at Dell is still not complete:

Yes, it has a fan behind the air vents on the left side between the VGA port and the single USB port. It is sitting directly before a heat sink. Maybe the fan can get disconnected, because the Mini 9 with the same chipset doesn't need a fan. I will give it a try as soon as I have the 2100.

How do you know this ?

Damn, I would prefer not having a fan like the Mini 9 and Mini 10.

There is definitely a fan. The docs I grabbed from the DCSE site show it plain as day.

Officially you can read it on page 2 of http://support.euro.dell.com/support...S/SFITS_EN.pdf. "The computer turns on the fan when the computer gets hot." The fan was little hearable when I was holding the 2100 in my hands some weeks ago.

Well, the PDF files are not always correct, the same sentence is in the documentation for the Mini 10v.

But would you consider the fan to be silent enough ?

Silent enough for what? I couldn't use the 2100 in a very silent environment, but since it is designed for pupils you can imagine that 20 loud fans in a classroom would be no good argument for this purpose...

Exactly, I'm surprised it has a fan, since it'a made for silent use.

I can confirm that there is a fan. I have found the laptop is silent most of the time, with the fan kicking on under heavy load. This may be because the little guy has, as far as I can tell, just the one vent on the left side.
