Default No Wifi - 06-01-2011, 03:44 PM

So I was able to upgrade from 10.6.3 to 10.6.7 using the instructions I found on this forum. But I can't get wifi to show up. It didn't show up when I installed 10.6.3 last night and not when I upgraded to 10.6.7. I've read some of the threads and tried most of what was suggested. The only thing I haven't tried is reinstalling Windows 7 (that is what was on there when I got it) making sure wifi is turned on and then reinstalling 10.6.7. That seems like a huge pain. Plus, I bought it off Craigslist and don't even have the Windows 7 disc - I have a Windows XP disc.

I really don't understand why reinstalling Windows will fix it. Wifi was definitely on before I upgraded to SL. I was using it in Windows 7.

Also, I read that Intel won't work with OSX. How can I find out what kind of wifi card I have using 10.6.7?

Any suggestions?

Please run the following command in your Terminal
Code:
ioreg -l | grep -i airport
Copy and post the output. Then run
Code:
kextstat | grep -i air
Post output as well. We will try to figure out a vendor of your wifi card (chip) then.

Looks like your system does not recognize wi-fi card at all. Take a look at dmesg. To do this in your Terminal issue command:
sudo dmesg
It will ask you for system password.
Output usually is not too long but you need to scroll terminal window up and down to read it all. Look for errors, warnings mentioning AirPort, PCI or PCIBridge.
Unfortunately I can not help you to find out a manufacturer of your wi-fi card since the system does not see it.

FWIW, you could always just remove the two small screws holding the rear cover on and read the label on the wi-fi card. If it's a Broadcom card it should work, providing you ran NBI after you finished doing your install.

If it's an Intel card you would need a Broadcom card instead.
Last I checked these cards are much cheaper than an iPad. Lots of them listed on eBay for around $8.

great idea. sure enough, it's got an intel tag on it with model number: 4965agn mm1

which broadcom card would i need to look for on ebay? is it difficult to replace?

i got the mini 9 for vacation traveling only but have been dismayed that even with 2gb ram it cannot run netflix without stuttering.

disregard. i just saw this post here about compatible cards: http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/dell...ork-cards.html

looks like some soldering is needed and i'm not into that.

No, you can find the cards on eBay that are direct replacements for $8, no soldering required.-
Dell Inspiron Mini 9 Wireless Mini-PCI-e Card - N204H | eBay

Just search for mini 9 wireless card. If it's a Broadcom card it will show up as if it was an Airport card.

All 3 of the mini 9's I have bought came with Broadcom cards, but I think towards the end of the production run they switched over to the Intel cards. Either that or someone switched it before you bought it from them.

Netflix won't run smoothly on either a mini 9 or a 10v. I tweaked my Firefox settings and by letting it buffer before trying to watch it it isn't too horrible, but I just went ahead and bought a Roku box for my Netflix, Hudu, and Amazon viewing.

$60, has wifi or wired connection, hooks up to a TV easily. They have higher priced models with higher def outputs, but I'm still using an old CRT type, low def so the base model was fine for me.

I'm having a similar problem, but i think it must be a kext.
Upgraded to 10.6.7 and ran the ...51 bootloader, but landed in "do not" sign panic.
I reran the 8.4 RC1 bootloader and UpdateExtra and got things running ok, but no sound, not even on reboot.
I lived like that for a few weeks, and today decided to go after sound. I reran 8.4 RC1, and installed tonymacx86's Apple HDA kext, and now I've got sound but no wifi.

I just did the dmesg command, and came up with output below. Any suggestions?

According to dmesg output the system is total screwed up and the only hardware working correctly is TrackPad. I would go for reinstall from scratch and rebuild the whole system in such case.
Another option is to try fix them kext by kext. They all failed to load with generic message "failed to resolve library dependences". It might be version mismatch or sequence of kexts loading or whatever else. Try to check kexts dependences with kextlib utility which has a lot of diagnostic options. Start simple with something like:
kextlibs /Extra/Mini10vExt/RealtekR1000.kext
