Default Installing 5300 wifi (was Swapping a HB95) - 11-05-2010, 05:19 PM

Just picked up a 11z off the Dell outlet to upgrade from a Dell mini 1012. Does anyone know if the:

HB 95 802.11n Wireless Network Card

Can be swapped into the 11z? the 11z I ordered only has:

Dell Wireless 1397 802.11g Half Mini-Card.

Thanks!

Looks like it should work just fine. If you are going to replace it though, get something better. I bought an Intel 5300 off ebay for $13. You can find great wifi cards for less than $20 on ebay.

Awesome tip I am going to order one. The HB95 really isn't that great - would love a dual band card.

Thanks.

Which 5300 do I want? "These adapters, available in both PCIe* Mini Card and Half Mini Card"

You want the half size mini card.

Half-Mini. But if I were to get one now, I would get the 6300 series. They say it helps with battery life and some other things.

I do love my 5300 though. One thing to note is the 5300 has 3 spots for antennas where as the stock only has 2 antennas. I installed an antenna at the bottom of my LCD bezel and it wasn't too hard. If you're not comfortable with taking apart your LCD bezel, look into the 5100 series (or I think 6100 series). You can see from pictures which ones have 3 spots for antennas and which ones have 2 spots.

Also, I have heard on here and some other places that people usedt he 5300 with only 2 antennas (they were scared to put in a 3rd) and said it worked just fine.

Hope this helps, feel free to ask questions if I didn't make things clear enough.

Thanks for the info - still waiting for the 5300 to arrive from China. This is the one I got - hope it's correct.

New Intel 5300 AGN half size wireless Mini PCI-E Card - eBay (item 230520213346 end time Dec-01-10 23:44:02 PST)

I am not afraid to take my bezel apart as I installed a new LCD in my now sold Dell 1012 this summer. It was pretty easy. I might try the 5300 with just two antennas to start since I don't have a third to try - see what happens. Thanks again for the help this forum rocks - and I really like the 11z.

As for 3 antennas vs 2 with the Intel 5300, see this thread for conflicting opinions: http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/dell...ompatible.html.
