Default VGA Problem in OSX 10.6.8 - 11-10-2013, 04:56 PM

Hi everyone,

new to this forum to ask for your knowledge!

i have recently purchased a Dell Mini 10V which has a dual boot with Windows 7 and OSX 10.6.8. Everything works perfectly apart from the VGA in OSX.

The problem only happens in OSX and not Windows.

I wait till OSX has fully booted then plug in the VGA cable from my external Benq monitor - a few seconds after i plug in the VGA cable the Mini 10V screen goes plain white and stays that way. Even when i unplug the VGA cable the screen stays white and I have to hold the power button down to turn the machine off. This has happened every time ive tried in OSX.

When i do the same procedure in Windows it works perfectly without any problems!

Anyone know why this is happening and a solution??

First of all you must be sure you do not have display mirroring turned on. In addition, external VGA in OSX on the 10v plays better with some monitors than it does with others based on their resolution capabilities. A good thread to read that includes the problem you are experiencing is here:

Hi and thanks for your reply.

I can't check if the mirroring is checked or not as that only appears when you have connected an external monitor. As soon as i plug in my external monitor the mini 10v screen goes white and crashes the computer so i can't even get that far.

I have tried this with my 24" Benq monitor and also have now tried with my 32" Toshiba LCD TV - but get the same situation - white screen on mini 10v and nothing on external screen.

Just puzzles me why it crashes the computer as soon as i connect the VGA cable and just stays at a white screen?

Well been searching these forums and tried a number of solutions and one finally worked!!

A simple switch round of the VGA cable worked perfectly - took the connector out the back of the monitor and put it into the VGA port and the one from the VGA port on the mini into the back of the monitor and it works perfectly.

Ive even unplugged it several times and plugged back in and works every time!! Very simple but strange fix!!
