Default 10v 1024x600 display is squished; pixels not square - 09-01-2009, 04:52 PM

I sold a 10v because I was unaware that the 1024x600 display on the 10v has the exact same physical dimensions as the 1024x576 display. There are 24 additional horizontal pixel rows in the same amount of space, making each pixel less tall than wide. The 1024x600 10v display doesn't have square pixels, unlike nearly every computer display since the VGA standard came out over 20 years ago! Dell wouldn't take the unit back without a 15% restocking fee.

Most people don't notice this. In fact, I read these forums regularly, and I've made some helpful posts, but I didn't see mention of this fact.

I think this post should be a sticky in the 10v forum so that people are made aware of this fact.

Interesting. Admittedly, I probably would notice, but I don't know how much of a difference it would make to me.

Then again, I'm content with the 1024x576 display for now anyway.

EDIT: Stickied as well, as it is worth mentioning, as it may be a dealbreaker for some.

I think the aspect ratio on my Mini 10v is fine with 1024x600... not sure how your statement makes sense??

There are actually 24 more vertical pixels in a 1024x600 than a 1024x576

And, this would make the pixels less tall than they are wide (according to your theory).

I have not noticed any problems. I guess we will see if other members have. I do not have time now to figure all of the calculations behind everything to compare aspect ratios to the standard ratios

I would like to hear feedback along with solid evidence that this is a true case!

I suspect the mention of horizontal pixels was a typo.

Thank you for your input. I edited my original post.

This is not a theory. I was going to take photos of a 1024x600 10v, but I sold it and put it off in the mail immediately.

If someone wants to take a photo of their 1024x600 10v, say, viewing this page:

Circle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This will clearly show the circle as an oval, wider from left to right than tall from top to bottom.

I read that sentence five times to make sure I got it right.

I will have to check it out, once I have access to my Mini (after work) and then post a screenshot for you of my results... unless someone beats me to it!

yep you are right, i was thinking about this the other day, but didnt invest time on it. The circle on that page is a couple of milimiters (mm) wider than taller, so the image is squashed. Man I are usually very picky with these things, now you made me sad

I just tested this out on my 10v... the resulting circle image screenshot is attached. I cannot notice any visible stretching. Correct me if I am wrong...

Screenshots can't diagnose this problem. You need to take an actual shot of the screen with a camera.
