Has anyone tried and had any luck getting this installed without access to a Mac, and just a second PC.

That's what I'm trying to do too.

I tried a while ago, to no avail. But I wasn't sure how it would work with the new tools that have been released.

How far did you get? I can't even get the installation to begin. Netbookinstaller loads, and shows the drives. I select the OSX dvd (10.6.3 retail copy, not ripped), a gray Apple logo shows up, then kernel panic, and it asks me to restart. I posted the first line of the error message back a few posts. Haven't gotten any farther than that.

Just tried 0.8.4RC1 and got the same problem.

I have read all 42 pages of the Inspiron Mini 1012 sticky thread. An interesting read, but no help. My main problem is the wifi doesn't work

Here are my system specs.
Bios: A11
Mac OS: 10.6.2. I did a fresh install from 10.6.0 then updated to 10.6.2 via the combo update.
NBI 8.4pre. 8.5pre results in a Kernel Panic ("You need to restart your computer") even with arch=i386. The boot screen is stretched on 8.5pre. 8.4RC1 boots but sound does not work. All other versions give me a KP. With 8.4pre I must use the flags arch=i386
System Profiler Information on WIFI Card:
---
Menu Extra: 6.0 (600.22)
Config Plugin: 6.1 (610.2)
System Profiler: 6.0 (600.9)
Network Preference: 6.0 (600.22)
AirPort Utility: 3.4.2 (342.23)
IO80211 Family: 2.1 (211.1)
---

What works and doesn't:
Sound works. Wifi does NOT work. The airport adapter is not listed in System Preferences->Network (tried manually adding it by clicking "+"). The System Profiler shows very general information about the card under the "Air Port" tab. I doubt it is detecting it correctly. AirPort utility is unable to find any Apple Wireless Devices.

What I tried:
Update to 10.6.2

Using various versions of NBI. 8.5pre, 8.4pre, 8.4RC1, 8.3RC5 . 8.4pre works the best (How the hell are others getting 8.5 to work straight out of the box? We have identical hw)

Installing various versions of the IO80211Family.kext. A question about installing kext is do they go in the "Extra/Mini1012Ext" folder or in the "System/Library/Extensions" folder. Other things I've read is to put them in the "Extra/Additional Extensions" folder and run UpdateExtra.app in the /Extra folder. Could someone tell me the PROPER way to install these kexts? Is there any configuration necessary on the kext itself besides putting it in the correct folder? I've been using KextHelper which seems to put it into SLE.

According to various websites my WIFI controler is:

Wireless Dell Wireless 1397 802.11g Half mini-card --

From what I've read, in this thread and others, you put the kexts in the /extra/additional extensions folder and then you run update extra from the /extra folder, and it does whatever it does to those kexts to make them work properly

Well, I got it to work, to a degree. Had to use TransMac to flash the USB drives, and 0.8.4RC1. After installing, I patched the OS with 0.8.5pre. After reboot, I can't get it to boot. I've tried using the "arch=i386" command at boot, as well as "arch=i386 pmVersion=0". Neither seems to have any luck. Anyone have any ideas? I'm a complete n00b when it comes to this.

Try 8.4pre from the Google website. It boots with sound, but wifi is still an issue (see above). You must use arch=i386

Ok, that worked. I might try upgrading to 0.8.5pre again later, but is there a need for it? Is the only way to get wifi working is to swap the wifi cards?
