Default Dell Mini 1012 and OS X - 01-18-2010, 05:53 PM

I recently obtained a Dell Mini 1012 to test out OS X on. It turns out that other than the cpu / gpu combo, the hardware is *exactly* the same as the 10v. In other words, wifi, ethernet, audio and the touchpad all work just like the 10v.

Unfortunately, the GPU is unsupported in OS X. It's a modified GMA 3100, not the supported X3100, so it won't work with hardware acceleration (at least not for a while).

I do have full resolution with no gfx driver, however there is no hardware acceleration.

I have patched the GMA 950 kext to load for the 3150 (they are similar), and the gui is able to partially load (with hardware acceleration), however it is unusable at the moment. The background does not load and it is extremely unresponsive (takes 10 to 20 minuets to just load the menu bar).

So, for now, *Don't* buy the 1012 if you want to run OS X. The 10v is a much better option in terms of support just because the graphics card works. In the future, the 3150 could be made to work, however it's currently a no go. I will be adding 1012 support to NBI, but again, it won't be nearly as good as with the 10v.

Thanks for the insight. Hopefully there will be some way to get support for the GPU so that the 1012 will be supported

I'm sure the hackintosh dev community is growing...given another 2-3 months a driver will be written...prices and options for the new 1012 will be out in the open...

On another note, this thread will be the official "news thread" for OSX on the 1012. meklort will periodically update this to reflect the current status of support for the 1012.

Default what happens next? - 01-27-2010, 04:56 AM

So what's the next step for OSX dell mini users? touchscreen, HD, 2ramslots...what model netbook would be best to accommodate these market progressions? I mean, for example, HD is far from market trend...staying in the muck of the old 80's standards for video is simply atrocious...

For drivers...been there done that...hardware drivers are difficult to implement, and even if one has a similar driver from apple to jump off of it's extremely difficult and costly to implement the proper driver.

What ever happened to the dell lattitude 2100? it's got touch/and 2 slots...can it run 4gb (the dell purchase/customization website is slightly misleading)? it does indeed have the intel gma graphics card we all know and love...yet with no HD...it maight make it to ebay to be resold in less than 6 months.

As far as HD + 2 ram slots, you might look into the Asus 1201n. The only problem with it is it's 12" (unless you don't mind) and no touchscreen. Personaly, I'd go with an ion netbook. The HP mini 311 would work and it's 11.1" instead of 12". I don't believe there are any smaller ion netbooks available other than the Point of View Mobii ION should also work (at 10", no hd screen, preorder only right now at mydigitaldiscount).

The 2100 would be nice to try out (touchscreen), but no hd screen and 2gb max ram.

If a majority of mydellmini people want a certain typ netbook e of supported, I'm should be able ot get one and add support.

Is there support for the Ion in OS X yet, given that it's really just a 9400 which we theoretically already have the kexts for?

Yes, the ion works without issues.

I'd also love to get my hands on the alienware...

I'd put my vote in for that Alienware one as the next candidate for support too! That thing would be a tiny powerhouse if it could run OSX- Meklort do you think that's even a possible build given the specs? Is that truly a netbook given the processor or is it more of a tiny laptop? Either way I LOVE the form factor of that thing just from looking at it.

Cheers,
Stephen
