Good for you and Welcome to the forum....

BTW: any reason you went for the 1018 and not the 1012?, the 1012 has the extra USB port and a mic jack that the 1018 doesnt have

1012
3 USB ports
1 Headphone Jack
1 Microphone Jack

1018

2 USB ports
1 Headphone Jack
No Microphone Jack

On the plus side the 1018 has the touch pad buttons that the 1012 doesnt have and the 1018 uses the faster DDR3 memory and the n455 (1.66ghz processor) where as the 1012 uses the DDR2 memory and the n450 (1.6ghz processor) a difference you are probably not going to see on a Netbook though, either way I hope that you got the 6cell battery and the Crystal HD accelerator options

Based on the top-level model Inspiron Mini 1012, the new Mini 1018 Notebook from Dell has several improvements but with reductions in almost all areas, however. New features include the two separated touchpad keys, which greatly facilitate use of the netbook, and the current Intel Atom N455 netbook processor (1.66 GHz, Single-Core) with DDR3 support.
Just curious.....

dont need a mic jack, if i was doing anything that crazy i would just use my HP laptop. as for the screen there was not an option for a diff screen. Oh, and the 6-cell is only for the 1012.

The N450 and N455 are both 1.66GHz. The N270 in the Mini 9 and most 10v/1011 netbooks is probably the 1.6GHz chip that you're thinking of (the 1.66GHz N280 was an option in the 10v/1011).

You're right that the difference isn't noticeable. I compared my Mini 9 (1.6GHz N270) to my 1012 (1.66GHz N450). You can measure the speed boost, but you'd never notice it normally.

As for the 6cell and Crystal, I'm not sure that they're available on the 1018. But I could be wrong. I expect the 1018 could use a 1012 6cell battery (but the colors probably won't match), but once again, I could be wrong.

Hey man, I ordered the exact same about 2 weeks ago and got my 1018. Unfortunately my hard drive failed a week in, hope the same doesn't happen to you. On the plus side I got a portable optical drive, the 2GB upgrade, a new hard drive and Win 7 Premium for free. I joined a few days ago, hoping to get some helpful tips for tweaking etc.

Yeah starter was fairly annoying for me, couldn't change the background etc. And as far as I know (spoke to the dell engineer when he came to change my hard drive) the RAM usage isn't much different. Seems like a win win idea if I'm honest.

starter (Windows 7 Starter Edition) IS Windows 7......its just a stripped down version with quite a few limitations to it, I run Win 7 Ultimate with Aero enabled and have no issues at all

the search function will bring up a few for you...there are different versions...you can do a search for 'winsetupfromusb' that is the procedure I and many, many others have used with no issues , I currently dual boot Win 7 w/Aero enabled and Win XP Pro with no problems
