Default The Card Reader--1 More Time - 03-24-2010, 11:27 PM

All right.... I looked around on the forum, but nothing I've tried has worked. I've looked in Base System Device type threads + ones that talked about the Card Reader related to Windows.

Once again, I will ask it: How can I get the card reader to work on Vista?

What I tried:
1. Dell Mini 12 driver for the card reader

2. Different install: Dell Mini 9 driver (installed, but my sd card is *still* not recognized.... Actually, when I insert the SD card, absolutely nothing happens & I am pretty sure the card reader is not dead or something like that.)

3. The most updated JMicron Driver ftp://driver.jmicron.com.tw/jmb38x/XP_Vista_Win7/ which is 1.00.40 right now, which failed with a device not found error....

***Did I miss anything to try??

There is something different this time.

Conditions: I started with Vista SP2 DVD....

I noticed that after the install, there weren't a lot of device drivers with question marks. Most of every thing was already there. There were like maybe 3 question marks total, if I remember correctly.

Now, there is only 1 thing that stands out in the Device Manager menu: Under Human Interface Devices, there are THREE listings of HID-compliant device & one for HID-compliant consumer control device.

***Any suggestions? What do you think? (I'm not sure what to do or how to do it, even though I have an idea...)

I was really hoping to have the card reader operational. I thought maybe I could test out an SD card I have for ReadyBoost (if you can do that) or simply install programs from the reader, instead of tying up the USB port or using an SD card for the pagefile.... ~shrugs~

In the meantime, I will keep looking. Thanks!

I will try MS Update later to see if anything there helps.

Okay.... Today has been one strange day, but....

The card reader is working now!

It is purely by accident, but I am still glad. It turns out that I ended up having both my working Mini 9s side by side today. (I was trying to troubleshoot an error message with the SSD I used to ghost Vista to get the 64GB Runcore to work again.)

Alright. Long story short, I switched out the RAM + SSD from 1 Mini & put it in the other Mini.

Mini #1: 2GB RAM, 64GB Runcore
Mini #2: 1GB RAM, 16GB Super Talent

Okay. Switch! Presto Magico & when Vista booted, the JMicron card reader was installed. (I had installed the 1.00.34 drivers from the official site. 1.0040 installed too after the switch, without any problems.)

I'm not sure what the problem is exactly but there's really only 2 major differences I can think of between Mini #1 & Mini #2. (Mini #1 has the XP COA + the camera, whereas Mini #2 does not.)

The contents of Mini #1 were originally in Mini #2 also.

I don't know what the culprit is exactly, but maybe it's the camera?? Or is there some kind of security feature/lock?? Perhaps taking some things out of the computer & putting them back in did the trick? It's all speculation at the moment.

Oh & by the way, the 3 reader drivers came up in the "Memory technology driver" category in Vista vs. the PCMCIA + Flash... category in XP.

I may end up trying out some things later.... If anything else interesting happens, I'll post it. (It's off to bed or so for me; I'm TI-red.... Woo.... It's been one long day in front of way too many computers.... )

EDIT: I did a fresh install using a non nLited, non HFSLIPped source.... The card reader still doesn't show up, so I am inclined at this point to say that it is faulty or broken/doesn't work. I really thought/could have sworn the card reader worked, but I guess not. I don't know what those 3 HID entries were, as I don't believe I had anything hooked up to the computer.
