Default TV Tuner (non built in) - 07-06-2010, 09:40 PM

Purchased a 1012 last week from the Dell outlet. Just upgraded the display and added RAM. Love it so far. Since I got the base model I don't have a TV tuner but would like to add a low cost OTA usb stick. Has anyone used a add on tuner with a 1012 and if so what model works best.

I would be using it mostly for Comcast QAM channels so antenna and reception is a non issue.

the AVerMedia AVerTV Hybrid Volar Max works well, its USB, comes with the s-video and composite 2 in 1 cable, a bag, the USB cable and little antenna or you can use your cable wire, software, runs on Windows 32/64bit...can record video in H.264 also..its like $80 (USD), I got the built in TV Tuner but a friend has this one....

Thanks for the suggestion. I found that model for $65 at Buy.com. Does it work well with WMC in Windows 7?

Pinnacle's HDTV pro stick is what i have. It works really well on the original hpmini110, w/ atom n270 chip. I don't see it couldn't work on a newer model netbook. I prefer using the WMC setup in MSWindows7 instead of the included pctv studio software. It will wake from sleep to record your shows and then go back to sleep when done.

I have used a Pinnacle usb stick with WMC before and it worked pretty well. Glad to hear the 1012 should be able to display hdtv/sd decently with a usb stick type tuner. I have a older external decoder type tv tuner that I am sure would work great but it doesn't do HDTV at all and QAM is what I want to view.

PCTV Now Offered by Hauppauge Digital

Just a heads-up that Pinnacle's HDTV tuner line was bought out by Hauppauge well over a year ago and so far Hauppauge support for updated Pinnacle drivers has been lacluster thus far. I would suggest skipping Pinnacle in favor of Hauppauge or others such as AVerMedia suggested earlier in this thread.

Yeah, I installed a pinnacle into my fathers Vista PC about a year ago and finding current drivers was impossible. It's still only works half the time in media center. I do like Hauppauge tuners but looks like I am going to grab a AVerTVHD Volar for $50.

I got the Diamond ATI Theater HD 750 and it works pretty good. It picked up more stations that the dual PCI-e Avermedia Duet in my desktop system. ATSC HD decoding is decent with about 40% CPU utilization but there's no USB stick type TV tuner that has a hardware decoder built in. Well, there is the Dvico FusionHDTV7 USB, but it's analog hardware decoding, not ATSC.
