Thanks to this thread, I've been able to get 10.6.6 on my 1018 using NBI 0.8.5pre

I had to install VoodooHDA-2.7.2 and NullCPUPowerManagement.kext as the VoodooHDA linked on this thread was causing a KP (so removed it).

I have installed a Dell 1510 wifi card, so have working sound and WiFi etc. but the graphics remain a problem. If I understand the issue correctly this is probably the lack of a GMA3150 kext but I wanted to find out if others with 10.6 on a 1018 are having the same graphic problems:

1. Had to uninstall the Adobe Flash plug-in for safari - otherwise if I visit a page with Flash content, Safari would freeze and have to be force quit. System.log would show "FP_FPCAOpenGLLayer setBuffer: unrecognised selector sent to instance xxxxxx"

2. I cant view any Jpegs at all with Preview. I just get a blank grey window and "Invalid Pixel format" in the system.log

3. Screen savers show "Cannot use xxx screen saver with this version of Mac OS X"

Are others with SL on Mini 1018 having the same problems?

Hiya matey, in answer to your questions:

1. Can't help im afraid i use firefox and flash runs flawlessly!
2. Due to the lack of the GMA3150 any pictures over 4mb(IIRC) won't display.
3. Yes the screensaver issue is the same with everyone.

I also have 10.6.6 but im thinking of reverting back too 10.6.3 as it was alot more stable, I randomly get kp on bootup and crashing.

Thanks Karm.
I will try Firefox.
Interested that you said images over 4mb - in my set up, Preview App wont display any Jpeg images at all.

Maybe this has got something to do with me using NBI 0.8.5pre rather than 0.8.4?
BTW I managed to get Sleep working (although a bit flaky), so at least thats a step forward for me.

ahh yes your on 0.8.5 maybe that is the difference.

Yes sleep does "work" but it still uses the same amount of battery it seems lol. Put it to sleep then leave it for an hour, the battery will be nearly flat.

Does your external vga work?

Sleep does seem to be working properly (also hibernation). If I run
Code:
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 3
...and close the lid or choose Sleep from the apple menu, the machine goes to sleep (Power light slowly blinking). I left it for 3 hours and battery percent went from 97 to 96. Also, Wifi etc. is disconnected on wake.

If I run
Code:
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 1
I get a proper hibernation(power light off completely) which is restored correctly upon wake.

External monitors dont work: the OS detects them, shows them Displays Preferences and I can change the resolution etc. but the monitor displays "Out of Range". I guess this is just down to the lack of a fully functional kext for GMA 3150 graphics.

I took the plunge & installed SL 10.6 on a Dell 1012 last Summer - Recently got a great deal on a brand new Dell 1018 so planning an install of SL on it. New WiFi card on order, upgraded to 2Gb RAM.

Major differences I've noted thus far: 1012 =3 USB ports - 1018 =2 USB ports, NO mic input on 1018, 1012 =2 speakers - 1018 =only one speaker. 1012 =DDR2 RAM - 1018 =DDR3 RAM. 1012 seems to be the more "up-scale" of the two . . .

However, I like the trackpad & actual mouse buttons better on 1018 than the integrated system on the 1012. I know what some are thinking BUT the trackpads are not inter-changable nor is the top case - external they look the same BUT underneath are completely different at least between my 1012 and 1018. I can live without a 3rd USB and a Mic input in exchange for a trackpad I can live with!

A note of interest with my 1012, (I am guessing will be same with 1018) VLC player does not show FLV movies (I know the hardware acceleration is issue) BUT for some reason a free version of a player called Wimpy FLV DOES allow me to watch FLV videos! I've watched a 17mb music video & 130mb Star Trek TOS episode both are .FLV format.

As for graphics I've found the old version of QuickTime 7.6.6 works for JPEG viewing (haven't tried beyond 2mb size) AND QuickTime 7.6.6 also allowed me to watch a 150mb .MOV Star Trek TOS episode.

No one has written a guide for the 1018, they have used the guide stickied here for the 1012. Karm has used some alternate kexts which are posted in this thread as well.

Okay, well I downloaded the link Karm posted to the Voodoo Kext thing, and I downloaded it (Currently on my 1018 with SL on it hooked up via ethernet). Now what do I do with the Kext thing? (Point me to a thread/guide something if necessary. Thanks guys)
