Default i3 11z NOISY fan that keeps turning on - 02-08-2011, 04:25 AM

I had a Dell 11z with the dual core Atom chip and swapped out the computer recently for the Sprint 11z with the i3 chip and it's great EXCEPT the fan is driving me nuts!

It's noisy and keeps turning on every minute or two on a loud spin cycle for about 10-20 seconds.

My old 11z did not do this and it's quite annoying.

Is there any way to adjust the fan settings? I looked in the BIOS and didn't see anything.

Does anyone else who has the i3 11z notice this happening as well?

The bottom of the computer is elevated so it's well vented and I have the latest BIOS update from Dell as well.

The only thing that gets the fan to shut up is to enable sleep mode on the computer. The problem is I can't access it via my home network once it goes to sleep.

If anyone knows how to control the fan OR gain access to the computer via the network while it sleeps that would resolve the issue.

No idea, I dont have the problem with my i3 11z. Although the processor is a little noisy , no fan issues. Have you updated to the latest bios?

Did you read my ENTIRE post? It says right in it that I have the latest bios update.

You can't hear a processor, that's ridiculous. You're either hearing the one fan that's in the laptop or your harddrive.

The 11z never came with an Atom - it was a CULV version of the Core 2 Duo.

Yes you can hear the processor , I know for a fact I can hear mine making machine type sounds under heavy load. I dont hear the fan at all. The fan hardly blows any air that I can feel

I've never heard of "hearing" a processor and if you can't hear the fan at all then something isn't right. I'm still convinced that what you think is the processor is really the hard drive you're hearing.

I'm on my second 11z with the i3 chip (swapped out the first) and the fan is quite noticeable in a quiet room on both. Both computer's fans behavior are identical.

And brookheather you are correct about the erroneous Atom info from me, the CPU I had in my old 11z was the Pentium Dual-Core SU4100. It's a Dual-Core though not a Core 2 Duo as you had mentioned. Confirmed that straight off Wiki's page on the Dell 11z 1110 (they never get anything wrong, lol).

The SU4100 is a slower clocked version of the Core 2 Duo which has the same code name Penryn - you can confirm this by running CPU-Z.

I'm not saying which one is slower or faster, I'm saying the SU4100 I had (and the only way it comes in the 11z?) is the Dual-Core and not the Core 2.

I have paid attention to my fan since I have heard people are having issues with it staying on. My Dell stays shut right in front of me and runs everything externally. I run some pretty hardcore programs at times and I hear my fan come on maybe 3 times a day for short bursts.
