Default UNR for A90 - 05-27-2009, 03:59 AM

I just received my new Vostro A90 8gb with the stock 8.04. I tried out UNR and thought it was pretty nice so I installed it to my ssd. Didn't they make this build specifically for the Dell Mini? If so, why doesn't the sound work out of the box? Also, I could not get Adobe Flash to install correctly to use for youtube. I dumped it and went back to the Dell's stock version.

Is there a build that I can just install to the Dell Mini/A90 without having to tinker with settings for a linux n00b like me?

it's made for a number of netbooks, not just the mini9. i'm not sure there's any advertised compatibility with the a90 yet as it is brand new. i realize these don't address your larger issue (wanting a plug-and-play kind of netbook linux) but if you don't mind running two shell commands this gets unr running:

i don't know what the deal is with the sound incompatibility - i cannot imagine the sound chips are different between the mini9 and a90 but they must be. the sound issue is filed as a bug in ubuntu and there's a one line config file change workaround (in terminal this should fix it: sudo echo "options snd-hda-intel model=dell" >> /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf). you need to reboot after doing that. i imagine a new unr will come out with this integrated in the near future (don't know much about ubuntu release cycles).

the easiest way to install flash that i can think of is (again, in terminal) sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer. youtube seems to work reasonably well on my a90 after doing that.

i am still having issues getting the camera to work with unr but otherwise i haven't had other problems.

i don't know of any plug-and-play linux distributions that will make everything 'just work' but i imagine the next refresh of unr will solve some of these issues as they are reported and resolved.

Unusual.... It is the same audio chipset, but functions differently.

As for the webcam, mine appears to work out-of-the-box on my Mini 9 with 9.04NBR, although I haven't used it other than to mess around with Cheese.

Unfortunately, there does appear to be a problem with the automatic plugin finder for Flash with 9.04; you
have to use Terminal:

sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer flashplugin-nonfree
