Default Install Ubuntu Netbook Remix from SD Card - 05-23-2009, 10:20 PM

I was wondering if it is possible to install Ubuntu NBR 9.04 onto a Dell Mini 9 *from* the SD card slot? Has anyone ever done this?

I have a bunch of SD cards lying around but no free USB drive.

Any help or links to other websites would be appreciated. Thanks.

No. The SD card slot is not bootable. You'll have to format one of your keys.... ;-)

I don't think it's possible, since you can't boot from the SD slot (right?).

A SD card will work via a USB card reader.

Mini 1012 | SSD | Intel 6200 Wifi | Ubuntu 11.10 64bit

Just to clarify, I meant installing Ubuntu onto my STEC 8GB SSD off the SD card (containing the ISO). Not running Ubuntu from the SD card itself.

If not possible from the built in card reader, will it work if I plug in a USB SD card reader? --answered above

How do you plan on booting your mini so you can access the sd card? You need to boot the 9.04 UNR to access the installer.

The answer is YES! I had the same situation - a 2GB SD card available. The reason why people think you can't boot off an SD card in the SD card slot is that the SD card slot will only show up as potentially Bootable in the BIOS configuration if there is an actual SD card plugged in the slot!

Rather bizarre way of doing this but I'm sure they had their reasons. If you have both SD and USB drives plugged in, then the USB menu item under setting Boot priority expands to two items - one for the SD card slot and one for the USB connector.

I'm typing on the proof - Dell Mini 12, booted into Ubuntu UNR 9.04 Live on a Kingston 2GB SD card and then actually did the install from the SD card as well. I made the bootable SD card using my Mini 12 running 8.04 with the tool for writing "USB" images.
