Default Jolicloud - 06-11-2009, 04:05 AM

I'm patiently awaiting my invite. Supposedly everything works out of the box, and one of the main developers is using the Dell Mini 9 as a test bed. I can't wait get the invite.

Jolicloud, a cool new OS for your netbook

Actually it's also built on Ubuntu, and uses a lot of familiar and already working software as opposed to Moblin, which uses a lot of newly developed software so that it works with Clutter.

I got my invite today In fact when i got the message, i thought it was spam! - having not remembered signing up.

Jolicloud semms a bit odd to me. It's less of a new os and more of another type of 'netbook remix' for ubuntu - not being a fan of the netbook remix. You have to open the jolicloud app and then you get the cool jolicloud interface.

It looks nice and some of the ideas are cool, but it's got a way to go.

Not so sure about it vs. Moblin. To me at least, Moblin is more of a standalone OS than Jolicloud.

Dang; sorry to hear that. I was hoping there was going to be something else out there to peak my intrest.
When I first heard that you had to get an invitation to even download the program it peaked my intrest good. But now after hearing your discription I think I will hold off and try one of the other trial OS's. Those two 16gig flash drives I bought to try new things out are burning a hole in my pocket. Thanks for your reply, fdalbor

Is it possible for current users to send others invites? If anyone feels up to it... I'm always waiting!

I just checked, it doesn't appear that I can invite others to download it And my activation code only works once.

Doing a quick torrent search, it appears that the one torrent of the iso doesn't have many seeders.

Okay so after using it more... I realised I was totaly wrong in saying that.

I think it's better than the netbook remix of Ubuntu - the base interface / desktop may look similar, but it's not a 'theme' or 'skin' ontop of the usual ubuntu desktop - like the remix.

Also, I was reading that come Alpha 3 (currently upto 2b), the whole interface will look like the jolicloud app. / web portal thing, and lose the UNR look. Which means the installed OS will flow seamlessly into the Jolicloud.

So don't let my initial thoughts turn you off it - it's a very usable OS.

But can you use your netbook when WIFI isn't available? Can you set up a dual boot? This sounds interesting, but will the Chrome OS work better with all the Google apps. Questions, questions.
