Default Using Wifi Antenna for WWAN - 06-07-2009, 02:01 PM

I was looking around for mods to add a wwan card to my mini9 and found the "Not so easy" jkk mobile article.

I reckon I can do this one the only concern for me is that he makes use of the Wifi antenna.

Has anyone done this mod?
Has using the the wifi antenna degraded the wifi performance\signal strength?
Is the signal strength for the wwan usable?
Has anyone installed an extra film antenna?

If you don't mind having a cherry red color LCD cover, the Dell Spare Parts cover includes 4antenna (2WLAN+2WWAN) antenna already mounted into the underside of the cover. These antenna are not frequency specific between WWAN or WLAN since both pair of antenna mounted are identical!

Default WWAN reception - 06-16-2009, 03:53 PM

Hello,

I just did the jkk wwan install "the easy way" with a dab of electrical tape and a verizon wireless USB720 (Novatel U720). The whole process was wicked easy but the reception stinks. compared to my D630 with the verizon PC5750 pcmcia card.

I was about to call my dell sales rep and get a new cover with the wwan antenna's built in but the comment that they are the same anyways made me think what is the point I am only using one at a time wwan or wlan.

Seems like it be a waste of time/money to swap in a whole new cover if the antennas are actully the same.

EVDO rev a is listed as 800/1900MHZ.

Is it true that all 4 antenna's are actually the same?

For $18 US you could order the cherry red cover and see for yourself but yes, both WLAN and WWAN on the Mini lid I RX looked identical and being the same electrical length would indicate they are not frequency specific!
