Default mini and stalls... - 09-23-2008, 12:44 AM

i just got my mini about 4 hours ago... i like it very much... remember i just got it so my observations are initial

i have all the options on the mini... 1gig ram.. 16 gig HD.. bluetooth etc... I have a 2 gig stick to install, the HD is the STEC

i am having general stalls, i expected it to some extent... i have done some general tweaks like turning off write caching and cleaned some junk off the HD and uninstalled some stuff.. it still is using 2 GB... i will report more on the stalls as i use it more...when i have a stall it last for quite a long time... like 30 seconds.... the write speed is not very fast from the speed of the installs..

one thing that is kinda irritating is it does not rest level on the table..it rocks a little bit..

the bluetooth works flawlessly as does the wifi...

it seems i am going to get just about 4 hours out of the battery,.... i am just surfing and downloaqding updates... pretty good i think... i have the screen at about half brightness, which is plenty

the keyboard it not bad, but i am hitting the keys around the one i mean to to hit...

so i like it alot, just getting used to it...

I'm sure you'll get used to the keyboard, we all will!

Is the Dell Mini particularly hot during the stalls?

did you disable write caching immediately, or after you found it was stalling? are you running the stock dell win xp home install? try turning off the pagefile?

i find that my mini performs better with write caching on, than off. i disabled it at first but was having really bad stalls etc. i enabled it again and the stalls seems to be less frequent now.

hey, just wanted to report back.... the stalls dont seen as obvious now. there is still a stall after every startup after the desktop loads... actually it is done loading everything and you can start to use the computer, but after about 30 seconds the whole thing locks except the mouse pointer, it moves but that is all.... the stalls last for about 7 seconds.... i have gotten used to it and it is not a big deal.

i really like the mini and if you dont try to ask it to do too much it will treat you well!
