Default Windows 7 performance vs Windows XP performance - 07-15-2009, 03:59 PM

Is Windows 7 noticably slower then XP? About the same?

Hmm. I can't directly answer your question, but I can offer this: W7 performs very well on the Mini--so much so that any slight gain in XP would not be worth the loss of polish. I dual boot W7 and Ubuntu, and I find performance to be very similar.

Perhaps someone who is dual booting XP and W7 or switched from XP to W7 (I went from vLited Vista to W7) could better answer your question.

How much RAM do you have? And is SSD space an issue? Both of those factors could also influence your decision. (Although W7 runs on 1GB, I wonder if XP does better with 1 than W7 does...)

Runs the same or faster, IMO.

Thirded, with gusto!

Things are shiny and effortless -and it sees my phone's internet connection!
(XP either won't or needs drivers to do so)
Even the stupid Media player works now. (divx like it's nothing-as it should be)

"Fourthed" ... and with gusto too!
Windows 7 is so much better/faster/slicker it isn't funny. And it is still in development. That needs to be kept in mind. Granted it is very close to being finished but it isn't quite yet. Once all of the development work is done, it should result in an OS that owns up to what is already being called the best OS in history, of any type.

I went from XP to 7 on both and never looked back - and I'm an XP fan - still use it exclusively on my development machines. I've also found that all of the Dell drivers for XP or Vista work correctly with 7, including the Mini-specific function keys (e.g., wireless/bluetooth switch, battery meter, caps lock indicator, volume). The only catch may be if you have a very small SSD (8GB or less) and have lots of other software/files you intend to install.

I use 7 on all my systems except my mini, but wanted to make sure before I made that leap.

I just got my 10v this week. I was so disappointed by the performance compared to an acer aspire one I had last year. Suuuper slow, then I put in windows 7 and I was floored. It is so much faster. I wouldn't recommend anyone to stay on XP at all. At least do a fresh install of it if you must have XP. I'm sure all the bloatware bundled was the cause of the laggyness.
