Arrow 720p-1080p HD Video playback on any netbook even you 10v - 01-09-2010, 09:29 AM

Ever wanted to play 720p video on your low end Atom based netbook? But you don't have ION based netbook? Tired of skipping and slow Full HD video playback? I just found out a near perfect solution for any netbook, even for those with just 1,6GHz Intel Atom processor and Mobile Intel(R) 945 Express...

and lol, i guess having a few people replying that "it werks!!1" clearly means it does and that those people know what they are doing.
But, the question is, did you try it? Not whether or not it's theoretically possible. Have you actually tried it and saw that it failed miserably? If so, which files/movies did you use? How many frames dropped, etc?

This worked for me on the 1010. Watched an HD file of an NHL game and an MMA event, and parts of a scifi movie, and did not have one problem with MPC.

I tried to watch a few of these with the 1010 out of the box a few days ago, but there were chops and skips, and even a couple of freezes. Hasn't happened to me yet with MPC.

I just got my mini 10 a couple days ago, I'm using MPC and CCCP instead of coreAVC. I was watching Astro Boy in 720p and it seems to be working very well so far. Was wondering if anyone else has tried using CCCP instead of CoreAVC.

I've owned a Dell Inspiron 9100 (3 GHz P4, 512 MB RAM, ATI mobile 9700) for the past five years and used to use Media Player Classic and CCCP almost exclusively. However, the need to play HD videos made me change to VLC Media Player which can comfortably handle 720p, and at least one 1080p video that I have tried ("Big Buck Bunny" animated short film) on that system.

I've had a Dell Mini 10v (Nickelodeon Edition from "Wally World") since last year, and I've only just recently tried playing HD content on it. The original WD hard drive died, so I replaced it with a Hitachi 320 GB, 7200 rpm drive from Tiger Direct. Other than that, it is stock. I have it connected to a 22 in. lcd monitor with a screen resolution of 1920 x 1080.

I prefer to use VLC player for mpg and avi files on my Mini, but it simply cannot handle HD content like my more powerful Inspiron 9100. After a bit of searching on the net, I found Shark007 codec package ( Shark007.net - Windows Vista Codec Package ). It claims improved playback performance using the standard Windows Media Player.

I did notice an improvement in performance. For example, I just watched the animated movie "The Incredibles," which indeed looked incredible in HD and played back smoothly on my Mini. However, the Shark007 codec package uses DivX as its default decoder, and that wasn't enough to play back "Land of the Lost" in 720p. The audio kept getting out of sync until the movie became unwatchable.

Then I downloaded CoreAVC. I only installed the required minimum package and kept the default settings. I used the Shark007 settings application to make CoreAVC the default codec for H264. I noticed a huge leap in performance for "Land of the Lost." Even the catapult scene held together pretty well. Not perfect, but finally watchable, and the audio came right back into sync after the major action finished.

Dell Mini 10v Nickelodeon Edition, Intel Atom N270 1.6 GHz, 1 GB RAM, Hitachi 320GB 7200 rpm HD, Windows XP Home.

HD playback with Windows Media Player 9, Shark007 codec package, and CoreAVC.

I have tested this with a couple of 720p files and my experience is that it has worked but sometimes there are some lag specially with the sound but i mean its even incredible that it can be started on a 10v. i havent tested 1080p but that should be harder i think and i am maybe going to try it sometime. I run win 7 with standard 10v(1 gig ram,160hd, 1,6 atom etc). i want to test this on a linux OS think it will run better there.

I managed to get VLC with 720p to work on my 10v - no skipping, so far (I don't know how it works, but I'm not complaining -- using XP + CoreAVC, btw).

I would think that 1080p, even if it did work, would be a waste of space given the screen resolution on the 10v. But 720p should be a visual improvement over standard DVD quality.

Just curious, but why bother playing something with a resolution higher than the screen on your netbook?
