Default Ubuntu 8.10 and internal microphone and skype - 12-30-2008, 11:32 PM

Hello all,

I am having a problem where I can not get the microphone working in Skype under Ubuntu 8.10. I have tried looking at alsamixer and do not see where I can select the front mic. Can someone please point me in the right direction. Thanks!!

Right-click on the little speaker in the top panel -> Open Volume Control.

This will bring up the Volume Control dialog. Click the "Preferences" button at the bottom...

This will bring up a list of tracks to make "visible". Select both of the "Capture" entries in the "Recording" section, and click "Close" at the bottom of the dialog.

There should now be a "Recording" tab next to the "Playback" tab in the original Volume Control dialog. Select this tab and set the input levels to what you want and you should be heard through Skype...

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply, but when I go into the properties, I don't have the selections you mentioned. Would a screen shot help?

So, you've re-enabled the sound card by editing your alsa-base file, right?

Here's some screen shots from my machine...

Assuming alsa-base has been successfully updated, you should have some Recording elements available for checking. I happen to have two because I have both the analog microphone that ships with Minis without a webcam, plus the digital array microphone that comes with the webcam (which I added after the fact).

Good luck!

Thank you so much. Alsa was set up correctly, but the dropdown on the volume control was NOT set to hda alsa! I didn't see that selection because of the need to scroll the box. You rock!!

You were able to install the version of Skype available on their site? When I looked for an 8.10 version, I could only find the 8.04 version as their most recent. Or, maybe that's just their site being out of date?

I've also found that you need both Input Source check boxes checked and then the actual Input Source set to "Front Mic"'
