It should just work, at least for me it did. You need to make sure you have it connected (and the mirroring going, complete with artifacts) and then just press enter in the terminal session. It might take a second, but then it should work.

I really have no idea what else you could try if that doesn't work.

I tried the hard way... I showed the display in the menu bar up top. Then just positioned the mouse over it, plugged in the display, waited for it to all settle down, then just clicked and guessed where the second item in the pop-up menu was... and turned off the mirroring. Painful, but it worked. Wish I knew why other things didn't work, though.

When I try to open display preferences I get this message:
You can't install the "Displays" preferences pane because it is already installed. The "Displays" preference pane is included with Mac OSX and can't be replace.
