Default Upgrading A Dell Studio Hybrid - 05-25-2010, 07:19 PM

Today I was curious and jealous of everyone modding their Mini 9's I decided to take my Dell Studio Hybrid apart and see what I could discover.

Considered in the past as a computer that is 'un upgradeable' I found out that assumption is incorrect. I don't have pictures up but I did discover the Dell Studio has two RAM ports and a place for a WLAN modem. So I took my Mini 9 apart and sure enough, the RAM and the WLAN modem fit.

I turned on the Studio and discovered I had Wifi and 2 GB of RAM. Now I want 4 and a permanent WiFi upgrade. Any helpers that can link me?

edit: I'll get some pictures shortly.

The first picture shows the basic DELL Studio Hybrid Unit when the shell and cover are taken off

The second picture shows the Studio Hybrid with 2GB of RAM, one from my Mini 9, and the WLAN Wifi card added. Mine had antennae connectors.

The third picture is of my Mini 9, kinda gutted

The fourth picture is of my Studio Hybrid with the two ram cards removed.

The fifth picture shows the CPU in an unlocked state. Meaning I can replace it with a faster CPU. After this I am afraid to turn it back on with out proper thermal grease coverage.

Wow. I found a WiFi card for 8.99, no shipping. Bought and paid for. Now I really want to get 4GB of RAM in this.

Where'd you find the card for $8.99? My Hybrid is remote from the rest of my network, so I have been using an old Asus router with DD-WRT as a client bridge. This would be a much more elegant solution, and it would free my client bridge up to use with my TiVo.

eBay. I just got it yesterday. The driver was in the Fedora repos so I had my USB WiFi connected while I downloaded that. Installation went pretty smooth and I like having the free USB port.

I think my Studio Hybrid has the hardware for a wireless keyboard and mouse too, I don't have one to test it out though.
