Default OSX SD Card Capacity Limit on Dell Mini 9? - 05-02-2009, 07:48 PM

Before I ask for help here, I'd just like to thank everyone who has put such obvious hard work into helping me get this far. Everything, and I mean everything, except the SD Card Reader is working perfectly on my Dell Mini 9 under OSX. And even that is partially working. To be clear, this is OSX 10.5.6 installed exactly as described in the forum post http://mydellmini.com/forum/howto-in...32--t1106.html, right down to the running of xslimmer and stripPPC.

The purpose of this post is to ask everyone who has gotten an SD card to work in the SD Card Reader on the Dell Mini 9 under OSX to post the brand and configuration of that card. I can start...

1gb Sandisk - works fine
2gb Sandisk - works fine
4gb Transcend (not marked SDHC) - works fine
4gb Sandisk Extreme III (marked SDHC Class 6) - does not work - must be read from external USB Card Reader
32gb Sandisk Ultra II (marked SDHC Class 4) - does not work - must be read from external USB Card Reader

I didn't have an 8gb SD card laying around to test - I'm hoping someone can post back if one they have works (or can confirm that it does not).

You guessed it - I bought the 32gb Ultra II card specifically for the Mini 9, to store data since the 16gb internal SSD is so full once you install iLife and iWork, even after running xslimmer. Not surprisingly, I am highly disappointed that I can't get it to read without the use of an external USB card reader. Though I'm close to giving up on the 32gb model, I'd still like to be able to use the largest capacity card possible.

Importantly, the same 4gb and 32gb SD cards listed above that will not work under OSX work fine if I boot from the SSD drives that I've got Windows XP and Linux installed on. And they work fine in other PCs and digital cameras I tried them on. They are clearly not defective. I did have to go out to the Dell web site and download the J-Micro driver described in other forum posts here to get them to work under Windows. (They worked straightaway under the Ubuntu 8.04 that came with the Mini 9. (How often have you heard of that??)

Net, I'm thinking that there must be some limitation in OSX "driverville" that limits the Mini 9 SD Card reader to some size, but I just don't know for sure what that size is. Or I just didn't install an SDHC driver correctly somehow.

Can anyone enlighten me here?

I have a few 8gb Sandisk Extreme III (class 6, 20mb/s, I haven't tried the 30mb/s one) cards that work fine.

I have noticed that the card reader is very slow in the mini 9 (at least the driver is) compared to a usb card reader. I think I top out at about 5mb/s on the internal drive and can easily get 10 or 15mb/s when connected via usb.

I have a 16GB class 6 which is branded Play.com but I don't know who manufactures it. It is formatted FAT32 and works fine in the card slot with 10.5.6.

I have a 16 GB A-Data SDHC (class 6) card that seems to work just fine in my Mini 9 (10.5.6, DellEFI 1.1).

I think you have a corrupted SD card driver.

Try downloading the latest version of DellEFI from GoogleCode, and re-run DellEFI again. I use the 1.1 final release, and it works fine.

I've used the following SDHC cards in OSX and Win7:

Kingston 16G Class 4
Kingston 32G Class 4
Patriot 32G Class 4
Connect3D 4G Class ?

All have been tested in the external SD slot and in my customized internal WWAN-MR-04 PCIe USB/SD card.

Using the latest version of Ubuntu, my Mini 9's internal reader, and a SanDisk Extreme card (rated at 20MBps), I get a sequential read speed above 20MBps and a write speed in the teens. So, you might be right that the OSX driver is limiting your card reader.
