Default Is your screen too white? - 10-27-2010, 10:46 PM

I've just noticed that when I turn the brightness up on my M101z, at about half way the whites on the screen get REALLY bright.

Is this a problem with colour profiles/gamma or something? Makes a lot of websites and stuff a pain to look at in the dark.

Sorry, I don't have the m101z, but just a note on display calibration as that's my line of work....what os are you on? Anyway, there are are some free software tools to do a very rough calibration (ie w/o spectrophotometer) that may help there. If you post your os, I may be able to recommend one. Of course it's entirely possible that your display is bad as well...wouldn't really know w/o "hands-on" / being able to take a look. Anyway, if you want a couple links - let me know...or just google laptop display calibration free software - something like that. Off the top of my head if you are on windows - Calibrize is one (though it only works while you are on-line) Here's another super basic one that you do "manually" by going into your control panel and adjusting the settings as you view the pages : Display Calibration - DisplayCalibration.com - Calibrate your computer display or monitor online for optimal viewing. Brightness, contrast, color depth, resolution and freeware software downloads. Hope that helps

I just got my new (to me) M101z on Wednesday, so I haven't had a lot of time to play with it. However, I definitely haven't seen anything similar with my unit so far.

Slightly OT, but I'm very impressed with the quality of the display overall. It should be nice for watching movies when I travel! And the trackpad is a HUGE improvement over the one on my 11z.

What are the chances of you spotting this thread! Hopefully some calibration will sort it out, I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit.

edit - I just used calibrize, I turned the gamma down and it seems to have softened the white a bit.

I met the same problem.
I found that when I use my m101z with the AC adapter the colors seem to be vivid.
but if the AC adapter is plugged out the colors seem to be whitish slowly.

The screen brightness changes when you plug/unplug the charger. You can edit the settings in power options.

There is a very strange effect going on - it is fine when plugged in but when you remove the charger the screen goes a bit darker (which is what you expect) but over a few seconds the contrast fades and it becomes hard to distinguish bands of grey from white background. Plug the power back in and the contrast comes back. Any solutions to this?

Does the M101Z do this like the HP DM1Z:

I am not talking about brightness, the brightness is the same, but I am talking about imagery.
Its not that the one is more sharp than the other, but there is a difference.
I just cannot put my hand on it how to describe it. I think its saturation or something like that.

When I look at the information tab while playing the disc, nothing changes either when I plug and unplug the power, but there is a difference in image.

Anybody with a USB player notices this too?
This actually has to do with the way the AMD Catalyst drivers do their video enhancements and the fact that it disables a bunch of them when on battery power.

When on battery power the following are disabled and greyed out so you can't enable them when on battery power:

Color Vibrance
Flesh Tone Correction
Video Gama
Brighter Whites
Dynamic Range
Edge-enhancement
De-noise
Mosquito Noise Reduction
Deblocking
Dynamic Contrast

In other words it disables everything but any video color adjustments you may have made, Automatic Deinterlacing, and Enforce Smooth Video Playback. I know they did this so less of the GPU is in use and therefore you will get better battery life but the problem is that there seems to be no way to enable them on battery power even if you set it to Maximize Performance in PowerPlay or even turn off PowerPlay.

So in short this is a driver issue and it might be hard to tell if AMD intends to keep it this way or if its more like a bug in the current drivers.

The issue with the contrast decreasing when on battery is exactly the same on the 11z (1110) which has an Intel chipset so I'm not sure this particular problem is down to AMD drivers?
