Default How to do a clean re-install? - 04-07-2011, 11:16 AM

I am planning on messing around with my duo a bit, and I would like to have the confidence that if things go wrong I can just do a clean re-install of windows.
I recently had to do this with my desktop pc, it was no big deal I have a DVD drive and a windows 7 DVD.
Obviously DVD drive, so I presume you need to re-install windows with a USB memory stick? If so how to I get a copy of windows on my USB key? Will dell send me a ski? Is there anywhere I can legally download it? My windows7 disk is a 64bit pro edition, so I can't take an image of that.

you use the provided dell local datasafe, and choose the option to make a system drive.
then you select the option usb drive (minimum 8Gb req.)

Will that not backup the system as it is? e.g with all Dells bloatware.

Hum yes, it will install it back to the factory-state.
sorry i misread that you wanted a clean install.

for that you will need to get a win 7 home premium dvd
from someone, and use your key that came with the duo.

Obviously it would cost you, but you could always boot from an external USB DVD drive. BestBuy has 'em refurbished for as little as $30US.. And I believe Google should reveal tools to create a legitimate Windows 7 installer bootable from a USB thumb drive.

I got my "clean" copy from this website. I scanned it with Microsoft Security Essentials and it didn't detect any malware. I used an ISO extractor and copied the files onto the usb, then booted from the usb. You won't need bigger than a 4gb usb. I would recommend creating a datasafe usb backup so you can go back to factory state just in case anything goes wrong; that one needs 8gb.

You can also use MagicDisc to create a virtual dvd drive on your hard drive and mount and unmount ISOs and have them act as a bootable disc.

Folks,
If you bought a Duo, Dell will send you the OS install disk on request.

No need for alternatives.

There is at least one thread here that details this if you care to look.

I can't find a page where you can request the disks on the uk site.

The reason why I went the route I did was because my service tag was not in their system for some odd reason, so I could not request the discs off the website and when I called their tech support, they couldn't help me either. Getting it off that site was the easiest way.
