Update: I spent almost 2 hours on the phone with Alienware support this afternoon (they were great, BTW - I was afraid I was in for the usual Dell Hell!), and the battery problem seems to have been fixed by updating to the latest BIOS. I'm going to keep an eye on things anyway just in case there is still an underlying problem with the battery or something else.

I have a new problem, however - the left side of the keyboard and the light below it on that side seem to be dying - they are noticeably dimmer than the right side. The support tech put in a ticket to replace the front light panel (below the keyboard) and various cables. Hopefully that will fix the problem!
