Just a reminder for you to check the BIOS setting (Legacy USB = Disabled) and hibernation is OFF ("sudo pmset -g"). Sometimes after a crash, hibernation mode will be reset to the default (ON).

I think your manual install works because it not modifying the kernel in anyway. So you still have a good patched kernel from 10.6.7.

Sometimes, starting over from the beginning is quicker. I know 10.6.6 will work with NBI special (2351). And I know I could upgrade it all the way to 10.6.7
