Default Taking pre-orders for fitted laptop sleeves - 02-13-2009, 01:47 PM

Hi all! I know this is TLR, but stick with me...

I've started making fitted 1000D laptop sleeves for some of our forum members and sold a few on this forum openly. I've been working it like a small business should - only making what I have materials for and funneling the profits back into better materials and more selection of materials. I've been making these on a Kenmore tabletop machine that was really intended for making halloween costumes for children and sewing suede elbow patches on tweed jackets. Making these pouches is really the upper limit of what this machine can handle.

The intent was to make enough to cover the cost of a 64GB Runcore, but last night I found a great deal on a used walking foot sewing machine on Craig's List that I don't have quite enough money in my Paypal account to cover. This machine would really open the door to newer and better made products tailored to meet more individualized needs.

So here's the deal - I have $100 in my paypal account currently. I need $100 more to cover the cost of the new machine. So I am taking pre-orders for as many of these bags as I can. They sell for $20 each plus shipping. The best deal going on shipping is USPS Flat Rate Priority (2-3 day) for $5. So I need to sell 6 of these today and tomorrow to cover the remaining costs plus materials (spare needles, thread, etc).

Product Details

The base bag is as pictured below - a fitted, fleece lined, flap top, velcro closed sleeve for the Mini 9. The velcro is black and up to 3" wide but I can cut this down in width if necessary. All edges are serged to prevent fraying and the black pull tab is now standard. I have some olive drab webbing if you would prefer that with the OD bags. I also have some sage velcro if you would prefer that with the foliage green (sage) cordura. All corners and weak points are either bar tacked or triple stitched for durability. And as a final touch I fix the hook part of the velcro to the main body of the bag and the loop part to the flap - loop tends to wear out faster than hook, and if it's on the flap it is much easier to repair or replace on your own.

I have the following colors available:

1000D Coated - Olive Brown, Coyote Tan (Dark Khaki), ACU (Army Digital), Orange, Blue and Rust
1000D Uncoated - Olive drab / Foliage Green (Sage) hybrid
550D Coated - Bright Red
1200D Coated (Ballistic Nylon) - Black (1 bag)
Assorted soft brocade fabrics - Pink on Black paisley (pictured, 2 bags), Gold on Black paisley-ish (pictured, 1 bag), Purple/green/gold patterned stripe (pictured) and fine black floral on red satin (very Asian looking, not pictured, 2 bags)

Descriptions:
1000D is common heavyweight "backpack" material. 550D is literally half the weight of 1000D and feels like "raincoat" material. 1200D is a very heavyweight cordura sometimes called ballistic nylon.

Coated means that it has a Durable Water Resistant (DWR) coating that is not completely waterproof but will protect against minor spills and short exposure to light or moderate rain - this is the "plastic" coating you feel on the inside of many day packs.

Base price is as above, $20 for the cordura, $25 for the soft brocade fabrics and 1200D cordura (they are harder to work with). I can do external pockets and other customizations if desired. Each customization is $5 extra.

Will you help me get a newer, better sewing machine?

Thanks for looking!

In for an orange fitted sleeve. The first one you made me is still holding up great but I'd like to have another sleeve for my Mac OS X mini.

Thanks again!

No need for another one here, but I just wanted to put in a good word. I just got one in the ballistic nylon and it is very nice! Looks like it could handle a ton of punishment! Two thumbs up from me!

Thanks for the good words guys!

I told you that ballistic nylon is built like a tank! Now you see why I say it's so difficult to work with!

Anyone else interested?

I wanted to put in a good word for psyopper's sleeves. I just received the blue cordura one that was posted for sale earlier this week and it is exactly what I was looking for. Fits snugly, has a soft fleece lining to prevent scratches, and is well made. If I didn't know better, I would say it came from a store!

I'm definitely in for one, but am unsure which I want, the Coyote Tan (Dark Khaki) or the black 1200d. Maybe the bright red one to for the red mini I just got for eBay. If you could post a pic of the Tan that would help me decide, and I will let you know if I want one or two after I check my finances tomorrow.

From left to right:

Black
Orange
Blue
Rust
Red
Foliage/Sage
ACU
Olive Brown
Coyote Tan/Dark Khaki

I normally hate using flash photography because it tends to wash and saturate colors, however, this flash photo gives the best impression of all the colors without distorting them on my camera. Slightly cropped but I included the white drop sheet to give you a color balance reference.

I'll be honest here. Looking at the Foliage/Sage more closely (other than a passing inspection when I initially received it) I'm not too sure I'm sold on it, quality wise. The color is correct, but I don't like the quality of the material. I'm going to generally discourage that color selection, and if someone really wants one in that color, I'll make it with a money back guarantee on the customers satisfaction of the materials.
