Default Invasion of the Netbooks - 11-19-2008, 03:22 AM

Business Week has an interesting article on how netbooks have not just added to our computing armoury, but in a lot of cases actually replaced the space that used to be occupied by laptops.

"It wasn't supposed to be like this. PC makers surmised that netbooks would complement bigger PCs. They would appeal to weary business travellers, for example, who wanted to get online and send e-mail from a hotel room. But in many cases, consumers are opting for netbooks in place of laptops."

I would agree. For my need, a powerful desktop & the Mini are the perfect combination. The in-between area that a full-blown laptop covers--which is where some people live--is not a need for me. I've got power and portability--and I don't really need those two at the same time, so this combo works great.

Me too.

My Mini 9 fills a niche for me that handhelds failed at.
Taking my computing fun with me is just great.

I actually don't have a desktop machine. I own a 15 inch HP laptop and my 9 inch Mini. The HP is my main computer (Even though I have grown to hate HP) and my Mini is my travel computer.

I might get a desktop from Dell when I pay off my Mini, but it mostly going to be for Movie watching and things of that nature.

If the rule you followed brought you to this, of what use was the rule?

I've tried to replace my laptop with a netbook twice. It just doesn't work for me.

At this point, I have a desktop relegated to media storage and serving, my laptop is my main computer, and my Mini 9 is my portable option/couch surfer.

If you actually read the article, even the vendors he's quoting figure the percentage of netbook sales that would have been laptop sales at either 5-10% (Acer) or 10-15% (ASUS), so the quote at the start is a little overblown.

Anyway, for me its an additional laptop, not a replacement.

My 17 inch E1705 is my main computer, but too dam big to keep with me. My Mini 9 will be my keep with me system to remote home to my Main system, using WOL and DD-WRT. I also have a gaming rig, but its my everything system with multiple OS's

i have a desktop for when i do some major editing or such, my mobile power house XPS 1710 and now my mini and BB
those last two replaced a dell 8600 that had a good size / battery life option and before that a e755 handheld!
the xps isnt very portable or battery efficent
now i have both
always dreamed of having a 17" and a 12" but those were always to expensive
