Default Dell Mini 9 Finger Print Scanner Mod - 06-17-2009, 06:15 PM

Wow, this has to be the most awesome mod I've seen for the Dell Mini 9 out there yet, and during the life of this site, there has certainly been a few interesting ones.
Forum user rich2871 has successfully installed a working fingerprint scanner into a Dell Mini 9 and has documented the whole process bit by bit as he's gone along. The thread starts off with the disassembly of the USB hub all the way to the proud finished product. In true modders fashion, he shows it logging into OS X with the reader too

See more on the fingerprint scanner mod thread.

This was something I have used many years ago and figured it would be a fun challenging mod to do. It was not that hard, most difficult thing was getting the slot just right and not messing up the coating on the palm rest. I did have a few small scratches where teh file slipped and nicked the rest, but oh well it works like a charm.

A special thanks for those who made Mac working on the Dell Mini 9 and to those who figured out where all the usb connections are inside.

Don't sell yourself short man, heh... Sure, for you this might have been "easy", but for many of us, this is beyond our current skill sets and inspires us to push forward, to learn new things and as cliched as it sounds, it inspires more people to "think outside the box." Also, you're probably the only person in the WORLD that's modded their Mini 9 to have a fingerprint scanner, which is totally something to shake a stick at But, I'll throw in another million kudos for your modesty...get it...MODesty? Ok, that was a stretch... It's late, I'm probably overly chatty... Off to bed I go to dream censored dreams of Olivia Munn and my old French teacher from high school...ahhhhhhhhhhh...zzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzz zzz

Thanks for sharing this and for documenting all the steps you took. Should be called by all rights the "rich2781-mini-9-finger print scanner mod" He totally earned it in my book.

well, because i like the mac so much and i wanted a netbook sized mac and a challenge to go along with it.

i have been using this one since the day i modded it and it has worked like a champ still. This is the one I am writing on right now. sorry for the extreme delayed response, been over here in afghanistan.

Keep up the modding
