Phew, glad I just got mine here in the UK. I have to say that now that I have it, it is a shame they're ending it, but, obviously inevitable. I like the sweet combination of no moving parts, namely no fan, the 9" screen is great, and the flush, yet reasonably large 4-cell battery, it seems like a great machine that I will enjoy hopefully for a while!

The Mini 12 has been removed from the German Dell website as well.

I ordered a Dell Mini 9 on bank holiday Monday from Vodafone. It still hasn't arrived. I called up just now to track the order and was told that they are having stock problems and just got some in on Friday.

Perhaps a 3G Mini 10 is on the way?

Should be interesting to see. Maybe while they are playing around with the WWAN option stuff on the 10v, they'll get all pissed off at the location of the RAM and choke the soup out of the schmagoolie who designed it this way.

I'm sad to see the Mini 9 go, but hopefully the propeller heads have learned from any mistakes and will surely make better Netbooks as a result.

Inevitable, but perhaps premature. I'm sure Dell sold thousands of Dell Mini 9's since the introduction and it is not lost on them the popularity of the 9" model. I would hope they take this design and optimimize it sooner or later and bring out a better DM9 -> HR screen that extends to the edges, a keyboard than extends to the edges -> i.e. maximize the small form-factor, ssd only, no fans, upgraded to a newer intel processor (dual core?), 2G+ ram, better camera, bt+wirelessN, expandable, 4-6cell batter, thin ... nice and thin ...

I'd be dissappoined if Dell does not evolve and bring back a "smaller than the 10 / 10v" model no matter if such a development is not already noted in the leaked roadmap.

Be Smart Dell ... ask your customers what they really want ... and deliver.

What's interesting is not just the apparent demise of the Mini 9 in accordance with the leaked Dell netbook roadmap from the start of this month, but that this implies the Mini 12 may soon follow... and how in the past four weeks we've seen all the roadmap's pieces falling into place:
  • the launch of the 10v
  • Intel's ULV platform making sense of the reference to the Mini 11 'Argos'
  • Microsoft's restrictions on netbook screen size for Windows 7 dropping from 12.1 inches to 10.2 (which rules the Mini 12 out as a 'netbook' in being eligible for a cheap licence for Windows 7 Starter)
  • and now the Mini 9 seemingly hitting EOL, only a month off Dell's roadmap timeline.
If this holds true then Dell will be left with just two netbooks down from the current four, and both of those will be 10.1 inchers the Mini 10 and Mini 10v.

The 9 ends up either put out to pasture or turned into a teclo-exclusive 3G netbook (although it could also be reworked as a Dell Android netbook), while the Mini 12 is replaced by the more fully-featured Mini 11 'Argos' ULV notebook.
I have been interested in the Argos 11 but not pleased with Microsoft's pricing structure. The Argos does come with 2GB of RAM per the road map. But the ULV chipset may not be great with only a 400MHz FSB (front-side bus).

For me, I would rather wait it out to how the 10 & 11 evolve.

Maybe they are discontinuing it because the money they make per unit isn't as high as what they do with the 10. The may be discontinuing it in order to force more demand for the units they make a higher profit on. Yes, they may bring out a better netbook, but at what cost? The selling point of the 9 for me wasn't just portability and hackability, but the cost. It was cheap. How many of us own more then one, or bought it cheap and have modified it heavily? Would we have done that with a more expensive notebook? Probably not. Dell is missing the whole point of why the 9 is so liked.....INEXPENSIVE. And in this economy, this is a big selling point. At the 10's price when not just get a full blown laptop? In my opinion, dell is going to shoot themselves in the foot.

I am a novice to all of this, but I noticed that you can still buy the Vostro A90 as of today. I just bought one Wednesday on eBay and just installed a Runcore 32gb drive, upgraded to 2gb of RAM from Crucial and am running OSX 10.5.7 flawlessly. Make sure you use DellEFI 1.2a5 though!

I just purchased my 9 earlier this week, glad i did. I just did a search for Dell Mini 9 @ PC World. Dell comes up as an available seller. I followed the Dell link and was taken to the Dell Mini 9 build your system configuration screen. I was able to build one and add to the shopping cart. I did not check out, but it seems that this may be a way to still buy one from Dell.
