Well shucks... Now I have to debate whether or not to modify mine, because if they're gone so soon, maybe a bone stock "virgin" 910 will become a hot commodity and crazy geeks everywhere will fight tooth and nail to outbid each other... One can only...(sighs)...hope.

Seriously though, sad to see it go so soon. It's been a sweet little piece of kit and always strikes up a conversation when/wherever I pull it out...whether it's the coffee shop...the bookstore...or while donating my human juice for RECESSION CASH!!! at the Plasma Palace...my Mini 9 worked every time.

They seem to be selling off the last of the 9's in the Asia Pacific region -- specifically my country Malaysia (Dell Malaysia: Desktop Computers, Laptops, Servers, Monitors, Printers & PC Accessories).

The shitty thing about it is they didn't have it available for sale to general public until last week (because Dell signed a Telco Broadband exclusive -- which sent the price of a 9 soaring to US$690).

So I had to get mine from auction -- (Dell sales told me that it's unlikely that the 9 would be available in my country) only 2 weeks later they started selling it on their website -- for US$100 less than what my sister paid! (It was my early birthday present).

How about we all start emailing Dell to bring back the mini 9... after all, there aren't many 9" netbooks left and all the 10" ones are pretty much the same (I have a 7", 9" [mini 9] and 10"), while the 10" is functional, the 9" is more portable.

FYI, I've penned an article on this (I'm a journo who does a fair bit of netbook coverage) at Dell axes the Mini 9 netbook, the Mini 12 soon to follow? (http://tinyurl.com/n2tokz).


What's interesting is not just the apparent demise of the Mini 9 in accordance with the leaked Dell netbook roadmap from the start of this month, but that this implies the Mini 12 may soon follow... and how in the past four weeks we've seen all the roadmap's pieces falling into place:

• the launch of the 10v
• Intel's ULV platform making sense of the reference to the Mini 11 'Argos'
• Microsoft's restrictions on netbook screen size for Windows 7 dropping from 12.1 inches to 10.2 (which rules the Mini 12 out as a 'netbook' in being eligible for a cheap licence for Windows 7 Starter)
• and now the Mini 9 seemingly hitting EOL, only a month off Dell's roadmap timeline.

If this holds true then Dell will be left with just two netbooks down from the current four, and both of those will be 10.1 inchers – the Mini 10 and Mini 10v.

The 9 ends up either put out to pasture or turned into a teclo-exclusive 3G netbook (although it could also be reworked as a Dell Android netbook), while the Mini 12 is replaced by the more fully-featured Mini 11 'Argos' ULV notebook.
