Default Windows 7 HD and SSD Performance Analyzed - 05-29-2009, 02:08 PM

HotHardware compared Windows 7 and Windows Vista with traditional rotating-disk hard drives and solid-state disks to see if there were differences in performance between the two operating systems. The article also tested the performance when the new TRIM command was enabled and supported by the SSD.

Summary:
Quote:
Our performance numbers verify our initial impressions of Windows 7. Platter based hard drives and high-end solid state drives, all run faster on Windows 7. Solid state drives see the largest performance boost, which showed up to a 35% improvement in read performance and up to a 23% boost in write performance. The performance difference for platter based hard drives is admittedly smaller, but even though the numbers don't showcase it, there is a definitely smoother, snappier feeling to running Windows 7 compared to Vista, which can be perceived even on traditional hard drives.

Great news, Steve. Thanks for sharing it. When is Windows 7 supposed to release to the general retail public anyway?

October, I think. I am not aware that Microsoft has published a date, but various statements point to October.

I by no means have inside info, but I "hear" that manufacturers will have it by Oct. the rest of us(unless you purchase computer w/ aforementioned OS in Oct,Nov,Dec - or OEM copy through ebay/Newegg/Amazon if available) will have to wait until January 2010 to purchase a retail copy.

I have nothing to back this up other than my kids best friends fathers sisters uncle has a neighbor that works @ MS and that's what came down the pipeline during conversation.

really, he's an engineer @ WD and seems to know alot more than i find out on the nets.

according to Engadget it looks like Oct. 22. My Western Digital neighbor still stands by his January claim however.

No, it's definitely Oct 22 for the "you can walk into a store and grab a box" buy it.

RTM will come much sooner than this, which is Release To Manufacturer, the OEMs like Dell and HP get it then and can begin making images with it for their PC's to ship.
