Default Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 - 04-27-2009, 08:20 AM

[news-img:2fu9kpy7]/images/news/ubuntu_logo.jpg[/news-img:2fu9kpy7]Unlike with previous release of Ubuntu, which were primarily only released as "Desktop" and "Server" editions, the new release (9.04 Jaunty Jackalope) is being pushed out to the public with "Desktop", "Server" and "Netbook" editions. The netbook edition is said to work very well with the Dell Mini 9 with only a minor known issue involving recording with the microphone, which at a glance seems to be present in most of the netbooks tested.

This proves the netbooks are being taken seriously by Linux community, I think it will be interesting to see if we see a netbook distribution of Windows 7.

Download the Ubuntu Netbook Remix.

I've had significant issues with the intel video drivers under Ubuntu 9.04 causing a major performance decrease and the inability to open video files. The issue and a fix are described here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReinhardTart...telDriverTo2.4

Honestly, I am really excited about it. It lowered my overall OS footprint significantly over that of the original Dell install on my Mini 9.

I haven't had any problems with using 9.04. Its fast and the initial install is small compared to Dell's load. Looks like a winner to me... This little Mini 9 just gets better and better.

OK, all I did was install UNR from Synaptic so I don't know if I'm using something different, but so far after only like 5 minutes of trying it again, it sucks. The netbook launcher bogs down my system. If that's all there is to this it seems pretty pointless. Unless Ubuntu Netbook is a totally different install with a more minimal ubuntu-desktop package, then I don't see how UNR is that useful. I don't know maybe I'm missing something or doing something wrong.

You might have a corrupt img. Try getting another one and giving it a try. The Ubuntu that came with my mini was freezing periodically and i would have to do a hard reboot to get it going again. My friend and his mini 9 was having the same exact issue.

With Ubuntu 9.04 NR I have not encountered any problems like i did before. A bit snappier and far more stable.

Will updates eventually address this problem? How will reverting work out in the long term? Will cause problems with future updates. Just asking because sudo this and sudo that but really don't know what I'm doing and rely on all the good advice on these forums.

I've tried UNR 9.04 recently. I had two problems. First, my SDHC 16g adata card is not recognized (both in UNR and Desktop 9.04) and a minor nuisance because a fix is available. There is a partial fix available taken from here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/360676. I say partial because I cant see the card in gparted.

Remark 1: Support for SDHC cards can be enabled via a module parameter. Add "options sdhci debug_quirks=1" (without double quotes) as seperate line to a new file in directory "/etc/modprobe.d" so that the "sdhci" kernel module loads with this module parameter.

Second, and limited to UNR 9.04, is using the Desktop Switcher from "Netbook mode" to "Classic Mode" has intermittently caused me to boot into know with no icons, but only a blank screen with a mouse cursor. The only way to get out of it was to manually activate the desktop switcher, and not be able to ever get into classic mode without some serious changes to the gnome configuration files. See bug here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/desktop-switcher/+bug/349519

As you can see they are still trying to fix bug 349519. Anyway, i,ve been on 9.04 desktop on my mini and as the OS for a samba/slimserver desktop and everything is working fine (other than the SDHC issue).

Oh and the final issue was flash. However, I followed PDR60's instructions here and everything was fine. http://mydellmini.com/forum/dell-mini-9 ... tml#p59699

I installed it last night and so far I love it. It does seem to boot faster and run smoother. However, I am having the exact same issues everyone has posted fixes for in this thread: microphone record, SDHC not recongnized and Flash.
Thanks guys for posting the fixes.

Oh, by the way, I forgot to ask. I just discovered Ubuntu Netbook Remix yesterday. Does anyone know if there is a Kubuntu Netbook Remix?
I've been using Ubuntu for a while but have always preferred KDE over Gnome, however I've never been able to install a fully functional Kubuntu. I sure would rather install a Kubuntu Netbook Remix that runs just as good, if not better, as UNR.
Thanks.
