The Netbook Effect: How Cheap Little Laptops Hit the Big Time

Features the Mini 9 as the example. This article is dated Feb. 23 but I don't see a mention of it here. It suggests that Netbooks owe their existence to OLPC - not entirely sure I buy that. It also says that the profit margins are razor thin - that I could believe.

Yep, you can be sure that Apple profits much more than Dell does off of the OSX on Mini 9 popularity.

It may or may not be the case. What matters is what is at hand.

I remember the movie "The First Twenty Million is Always the Hardest" where they featured to create a $99 PC

Before the OLPC there were a few very small laptops but they cost big bucks. I had bought a refurbished Dell 12" (I think it was a X200 with USB 1.1 and wireless b) for $1500.00. Others were up there in cost as well. I replaced this Dell with the Asus EEE, then replaced the Asus EEE with the Dell mini 9.

I believe the OLPC indirectly helped create the market because of the numerous complaints about it's sugar interface. Never mind that it is apparently what kids want; the people with a voice were those who got one via the give 1 get 1 programme, many of whom complained bitterly about its usability. There was clearly a market in the developed world for a small, simple laptop with a GUI bases on the original work by Xerox (eg windows and all the Unix front ends such as OSX)

It's not clear to me that OLPC was really what kids wanted or needed, but I will agree that OLPC certainly raised interest in a small, light and "good enough" laptop. Intel was pushing its competing "Classmate" design - it wasn't until Atom came out that netbooks the masses might actually want to use were practical. Asus captured people's interest with the first Eee and it's been a wild ride ever since.
